태국의 한국전쟁 참전 원인에 대한 연구

Abstract

1950년 한국전쟁이 발발하자 미국의 주도로 유엔은 한국을 군사적으로 지원하기로 결정했다. 군사 원조를 제공한 국가들 중에는 태국이 있었다. 태국은 한국(남한)과 외교관계가 없었는데도 불구하고 한국전쟁에 참전했다. 이는 태국과 한국 일반인들 사이에서 잘 알려지지 않은 한국전쟁의 일면이다. 이 논문의 목적은 1950년대 한국 전쟁에 대한 태국의 개입을 조사하는 것이다. 태국은 왜 한국에 군대를 보냈을까? 태국은 정확히 어떻게 한국전쟁에 참전했는가? 이를 위해 태국 지도부의 발언, 특히 당시 태국 총리였던 원수 쁠랙 피분송크람의 발언을 추적하고자 한다. 또한 중국과 베트남과 밀접하게 접해 있던 국가로서의 태국의 당시 지정학적 상황, 그리고 태국 내외부의 공산주의 위협이 태국 지도부의 결정에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 이해하고자 한다. 동시에 태국이 한때 일본과 동맹을 맺고 연합군에 선전포고를 했다는 사실 등 이러한 과거가 전후 태국에 어떤 영향을 미쳤을지 이해하려고 한다. 이 연구는 피분송크람의 지도하에 있는 태국이 유엔과 미국에 대한 지지의 표시로 한국전쟁에 전투부대를 보내기로 결정했다는 것, 그리고 그에 대한 대가로 미국의 군사원조를 기대했다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 다시 말해, 태국의 파병결정에는 이념적이고 실질적인 고려가 있었다는 것이다. 전쟁 기간 동안 태국은 전투부대를 파견했을 뿐만 아니라 유엔총회에서 미국을 적극적으로 지지하기도 했다. 불행하게도, 미국 국무부가 태국에 대한 명확한 약속을 거절했기 때문에, 태국은 기대했던 것만큼의 보상(군사원조)을 받지는 못했다.

When the Korean war broke out in 1950, the United Nation, under the leadership of the United States, decided to send assistance to South Korea. Among the nations who provided military aid was Thailand. Thailand joined the Korean War, even though it was not in a diplomatic relationship with Korea (South Korea). This is an aspect of the Korean War that is not very well-known among either the Thai or Korean general public. The objective of this thesis is to examine Thailands involvement in Korean War in the 1950s. Why did Thailand send troops to Korea? How exactly was Thailand involved in the Korean War? For this purpose, the author traces the statements made by the Thai leadership, especially Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkram, Thailands prime minister at that time. This paper also seeks to understand Thailands geopolitical situation at the time, as a country that closely bordered China and Vietnam, and how Communist menace both in and out of the country affected the Thai leaderships decisions. At the same time, it seeks to understand how its past – the fact that Thailand had once allied itself to Japan and declared war against the Allies – might have affected its postwar attitude. This study found that Thailand, under Phibunsongkrams leadership, decided to send troops to Korea as a gesture of support to the United Nations and the United States, expecting foreign aids in return. In other words, there were ideological and practical considerations to sending men to fight in Korea. During the war, not only had Thailand sent combat troops, but also actively supported the United States initiative in the UN General Assembly. Unfortunately, these efforts were not exactly reciprocated by the United States, as the State Department refused to make any clear commitment to Bangkok.
