Abstract

Hwang Yoonseok is both the author of Yijaenango that is the massive diary and the literary person from Hungdek(in Jeolla Peovince). He entered the government service as Chambong(a official manager of royal tomb) and fulfilled his contract, finally moved to Hanyang(Seoul) and worked at Uiyenggo(royal warehouse) as bongsa(a low-ranking government official). He was from the province and lived Banchon(a national school and its environs) by himself. But housing status had taken a downward turn contrary to his expectation. He didnt receive a warm welcome by the owner of the house, so decided to get a concubine who could manage the family affairs. Yijaenango shows his several attempts and he even sent several poems to the father of one of them. This is interesting because there is a general recognition that the receiver of proposal poems is a woman, but Hwang sent them to her father. His choice is very down to earth, so we may assume that these cases could more happen except him because a womans father was literate and had effective power to determine marriage in traditional era. The second is, poets often exert their technical skill for practical purpose. Hwang also used the various poetic technique to get messages across. He was known as a man of wide reading and a retentive memory and arranged lots of authentic precedents in his poems and they were more subtle and were similar to pronunciation and similarity of the situation. In short, these sorts of his poems are distinctive unlike the typical proposal poems.
