This thesis is about placing of royal tomb of Yeongjo(英祖) who is the 21st king of Joseon dynasty. The royal tomb of Youngjo was named Wonneung(元陵). There were many twists and turns when placing Wonneung site in Dongguneung(東九陵). The purpose of this study is to analyze Ganshim(看審, evaluating a site) which was given by administrators or geomancers in site selecting process at that time. And next is to scrutinize the effect of Ganshim on deciding the site for Royal tomb. More specifically, this study is to find the reason why Yeongjo could not be placed on the right side of his Queens tomb which was a chosen site before his dead. And also, this study is to discover why they chose the right area of Geunwonneung(健元陵, the first kings tomb of Joseon Dynasty) as Wonneung site among many options.
Through this study, it is found that the reason of not being placed in Hongneong(弘陵) heohuji(虛右地), which was his chosen site for his after dying tomb, is because of the so called jangyeongappijibeob(長年甲避之法). Burial time and Bungeom(分金, space angle coordinate) could be indicated as 60 gapja(甲子). According to Jangyeongappijibeob(長年甲避之法), if time and space angle match up as the same first letter of cheongan(天干), it is considered as an ominous case, and Hongneong was one of them.
There was some hesitation in making former Neung leong(寧陵) site as Won leong, but a problem of the great urgency surpassed this weak point. As a result, they could use the former tomb site as a new one by only changing back and head orientation, and it was the best way to change old to new without spending any time or manpower.
Over viewing of The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) and Shan Leong Do Gam Yui Gwea(山陵都監儀軌), the conclusion is as follows. His new young Queen-Jeongsoon(貞純王后) is not to be blamed for Young Jo(英祖)s not being able to be placed on the side of his former queens tomb, Hong leong. And also, it is not because of Jeong Jo(正祖) though he had an authority to change it. Only because, there were an inharmony between the earth fortune and his death year.
