Abstract
This study aims to confirm the trade scale of envoys’ trade to Ming which has not been illuminated on the study of trade order in the East Asia during the 16th century. The envoys’ trade to Ming for the early period of Joseon means the trade of public & private territory developed from the envoys’ route from Uiju(義州) to Liaodong, Peking since they left Joseon for Ming. A variety of classes engaged in the envoys’ mission participated in this trade.
This study tried to analogize the aspects of envoys’ trade(public & private trade) in the 16th century through several supporting materials such as the regulations controlling the private trade, cases of uncovering the crackdown of trade, the flow of silver trade, the numbers of wagons used for envoys" mission by mentioning the scale of public & private trade in the royal court. However, the trade scale examined from this study, was mainly confined to that of Peking envoys’ group. As for the hundreds of convoys(護送軍)’ trade scale who should escort the envoys’ group as well as that of the Liaodong convoys’ group to Liaodong, it has been left for the future study assignment because it has not been considered in this study. If this is additionally studied in the future, we will be able to approach the scale of Joseon envoys’ trade in the 16th century much more closely.
