Abstract
Supercritical dyeing technology (SFD) utilizing with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) has been gaining attention as an alternative eco-friendly dyeing technology. The dyeing process which adds color to the fabric in conventional textile industry, is an energy intensive process. 200 kg of water was consumed to dye 1 kg of fabric, and waste water including various organic substances such as additives, dispersants, and residual dyes, are required an additional treatment step.
SFD is known to have environmental and economic benefits; for example, SFD does not consume water or emit organic wastes (i.e., dye residues, additives, and surfactants) due to the high solubility of disperse dyes in sc-CO2. In addition, sc-CO2 easily separated into a gas phase at atmospheric conditions makes the advantages of saving energy by eliminating the additional drying process over the conventional dyeing process. SFD began with polyester fibers and disperse dyes which have high affinity to sc-CO2, and researches are being applied to natural fibers such as cotton and wool as well as various types of synthetic fibers. We focused on fundamental mechanism study of polyester fibers and disperse dyes system.
The mechanism of dye molecule impregnation into a polymer matrix during SFD is known to occur in the following sequence: the dye molecule (1) dissolves in the supercritical medium, (2) transports to the fiber, (3) absorbs onto the surface of the fibers, and (4) diffuses into the fiber matrix. Previous researchers recognized that the diffusion of dye molecules into the fiber matrix is the slowest of these multiple processes, and the diffusion step controls the overall dye uptake as rate determining step. However, in the experimental methods suggested by the previous studies, it was assumed that there was an error which could be caused from the dissolution process. Therefore, the effect of dissolution rate on the overall dye uptake was analyzed and the new methodology was proposed and reviewed through the results.
In order to analyze the effect of dissolution rate on the overall dyeing rate, the dissolution rate of dye particles was controlled through the recrystallization method. Since the dissolution rate of solid particles is directly related to the specific surface area, it can be improved through micronized particle because the specific surface area increases as size of particle decreases.
To recrystallize and micronize the dye particles, aerosol solution extraction system (ASES) and rapid expansion of supercritical solution (RESS) which were used supercritical fluids as anti-solvent or solvent were utilized. When recrystallization was carried out by ASES method, micronized particles was not obtained due to the high solubility of CO2 under specific operating conditions. These results were analyzed through the concept of Hansen solubility parameter (HSP). As a results of dye particles recrystallized by RESS, the particle size decreased by 4–8 times and the specific surface area increased by 5–7 times. The crystallinity of the particles decreased but the crystal structure was maintained after recrystallization process. The melting temperature was kept constant with considering the uncertainties but the heat of fusion decreased about 3–4 J/g because of lower crystallinity. The improved specific surface area, lower the heat of fusion and crystallinity contributed to the improvement of the dissolution rate.
The dissolution rate of RESS-processed particles in sc-CO2 was measured utilizing an in-situ ultraviolet / visible spectrometer. An in-situ spectrometer was used for the first time to observe the dissolution rate of dye solute in sc-CO2 because the information of supercritical solution can be measured without disturbing the system. The dissolution rate of the micronized dye particles showed significantly improved results compared to the particles before micronization. The results were predicted using the Noyes-Whitney model and the Weibull equation. As a results of the rate of dye uptake experiments with micronized particles, it was confirmed that the rate of dye uptake increased using micronized dye particle compared to the that of unprocessed dye particle. Therefore, in the supercritical dyeing mechanism proceeding to dissolution-adsorption-diffusion, the dissolution step is also involved in the overall dyeing rate and much attention is needed to avoid the error originating from dissolution step.
Diffusion of dye molecule in polymer matrix is still the most important step in understanding the SFD. Most of previous studies have observed the overall dyeing process to determine the diffusion coefficient of dye in fiber and recognized it as the only result of diffusion. However, the previous our results suggest that it is difficult to rule out the dissolution step in the dyeing process, so a new methodology for determining the diffusion coefficient via extraction was proposed. The impregnation-based diffusion coefficient measuring method observes the change of dye concentration in fiber during penetrating dyes into the fiber. But the extraction-based method observes the concentration of dye in fiber while extracting the dyes from pre-dyed fiber. In extraction-based method, since the condition where the concentration of fiber surface is zero can be easily achieved through the sweep gas, the error caused from the dissolution step can be easily excluded.
The effects of the diffusion coefficient of dye molecule in polyester fibers on the temperature, pressure and molecular structure were quantitatively analyzed. Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) and Arrhenius models were applied to explain the temperature and pressure dependence on diffusion coefficients. Diffusion coefficients of dyes in plasticized polyester fibers in a CO2 environment can be more accurately predicted by the WLF model which considers the extent of fractional free volume in polymer matrix. The diffusion coefficient according to the molecular structure was found to be closely related to the molecular weight. It is likely a result of van der Walls attraction because of the absence of possible chemical reaction between the disperse dyes and the polyester fibers. Moreover, the dye distribution in the cross-sectioned fiber was observed by fluorescence microscope. It was confirmed that the dyes in the cross-sectioned fiber were uniformly distributed and at the same time the dyes were absorbed in a specific site. From these results, a dual-sorption model was examined, and it was predicted more accurately than Fickian diffusion model.
