Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current status of books related to Shuowen Jiezi, to study its academic meanings and to discover the concrete version of each Shuowen Jiezi publishing.
Currently, there are 45 kinds of Shuowen Jiezi related books remained in Kyujanggak (奎章閣), and it can be segmented as follows: 7 kinds of original books, 8 kinds of books to be annotated, 21 kinds of books studying Shuowen Jiezi itself, and 9 kinds as the rest.
The Book named Kyujang Chongmok(奎章總目), the complete catalog(ue) of books remained in Kyujanggak, published in 1781 stated as follows: Shuowen Jiezi was written by Xu Shen(許愼) in Han dynasty and was composed with 12-volume books. Xu Xuan(徐鉉) from Song dynasty added notes, complemented the reading sound of each character, and appended new character. In perspective of graphonomy, Shuowen Jiezi is the father of both Xiaozhuan(小篆) and Philology. The quotation in Shuowen Jiezi of some scriptures have quite a few interpretative distinctions from the original scripture contents. At present, only 〈奎2670〉 and 〈奎4974〉 composed as 12-volume books which mean high probability to be Shuowen Jiezi specifically mentioned by Kyujang Chongmok. However, since 〈奎4974〉 was published in 1809, therefore it is highly likely that 〈奎2670〉 be the one. As it turns out, this book was not engaged by Xu Xuan, but in fact, was sorted by Li Dao(李燾) who lived in South Song dynasty and the book is Shuowen Jiezi Wuyin Yunpu(說文解字五音韻譜).
Considering the situation of Qing dynasty when the study of Shuowen Jiezi flourished, only a few books related to the Shuowen Jiezi are possessed in Kyujanggak. Fortunately, most of those books are prestigious and reliable edition. Moreover, the most important four major annotated books such as Duan Yucai(段玉裁), Gui Fu(桂馥), Wang Yun(王筠) and Zhu Jun Sheng(朱駿聲) which has variety versions are also included. These diverse versions of annotated book allow it to be used in the new studies on related field. For now, careful inspection is required as errors are shown in the bibliography of titles and authors, and it is necessary to correct them and to convey the correct information.
