Abstract
Ito Togai, a representative merchant scholar of Japan in the 18th century, was born as the eldest son of Ito Jinsai and succeeded and developed the philosophy of his father as the second president of Kogido(the school of ancient Confucianism). Although Their academic goal was to learn and practice Confucius and Mencius way, they also put value in language learning as the basis for studying the scripture of Confucianism.
Many text books for language studying, therefore, were produced as by-products in the process of such research.
In this paper, focusing on Kunmojikai(the kanji dictionary brought from Korea), I would like to clarify how it was used in meibutsu-rikujo(the dictionary compiled by Togai), and his Korean studies. This will bring out the methodology of Confucian studies in Kogido and their role of social enlightenment.
