- Abstract
- The article aims to re-examine Park Ji-wons records on antiquities, calligraphy and painting(古董書畵) left behind and discuss art criticism(鑑賞之學) in detail. Park Ji-won(1737-1805) has written a wide range of observations on antiques and art works and his thoughts on them in Yeonam-jip and Yeolhailgi. First of all, Park Ji-won diagnosed the trend of collecting antiques and art works that rapidly flowed from China and spread widely around Seoul in the late Joseon Dynasty. And information on production and distribution, which is the basis of antique and art flavoring, was recorded in detail. In addition, Park Ji-won wrote about the qualities that enthusiasts need to enjoy antiques and artwork. Park aimed to remind Joseons antique and artwork lovers that the important thing in enjoying antiques and artworks is art appraisal and CheongGong(淸供). Parks record on antiques and art works is at the heart of the reconstruction of art criticism. First he tried to break the conventional wisdom that antiques were auspicious. He then suggested that the culture of enjoying antiques and art works as a medium for measuring the situation in China, not only in aesthetic areas. Finally, Park Ji-won discussed art criticism compared to nine grades official selection system(九品中正). Through this perspective, he was wary of the independence and ahistoricity of art. This marks a very unique status in the logical geography of Joseons artistic criticism at the time.
