Saga-Dokseo-Je(賜暇讀書制) was first established during Se-Jong(世宗)s reign. Then, there was no particular space for reading, so one searched for an accommodating place such as ones own abode or a temple within or outside the capital city. Seong-Jong(成宗) began a full-on implementation of the system and created an independent building, Dokseodang, in Yongsan(龍山). Yeonsan-Gun(燕山君) had also implemented Saga-Dokseo-Je at first, but soon abolished the system along with Hongmun-gwan(弘文館). After Jung-Jong(中宗) was enthroned with Banjeong(反正), he reinstated Hongmun-gwan and Saga-Dokseo-Je. In place of the reading space in Yongsan that Yeonsan-Gun had used as a playsapce for maids-in-waiting, Jung-Jong(中宗) built a new reading space in Dongho(東湖). Subsequently, the reading space was burnt down during the Imjin War, but during the reign of Suk-Jong(肅宗) it was repaired as Saga-Dokseo-Je was also steadily, if partially, carried out. Evidently, Saga-Dokseo-Je and Dokseodang were veiy meaningful establishments, and there has been much research on the subject from early on. There has been ample research conducted especially on Dongho Reading Space since Yun-Hyeons 〈Hodang-Gi(湖堂記)〉, a detailed record of the reading space, was introduced. However, the print condition of Yun-Hyeons 〈Hodang-Gi〉- produced in 1554 is quite poor. Thus, this paper reconstructed the mid-16th-centuiy Dongho Reading Space using 〈Hodang-Gi〉 and other texts left by Yun- Hyeon(尹鉉), in addition to supplementary resources such as 〈Dokseodang-Gyehyoido(讀書堂契會圖)〉, produced around 1570. The paper also pays attention to significant structures such as Sindang(新堂) and Haenggak(行閣), Jeodang(正堂) and Buok(附屋), Seosangbang(西上房), Namlu(南樓), Munhoeidang(文會堂) and others, and the landscapes and sceneries around the reading space.-
