Abstract
Takai Kozan(高井鴻山), well-known for his literary works and arts, was born in late Edo era. He studied both in the traditional Kyoto and the capital, Edo, and made lively economic and literary activities. His activities reflect in detail the circulation of the central culture in provinces, based on the circulation of books.
His literary collection reveals that his study was affected by Confucianism. His interest in nationalism, Chinese letters and paintings, poetry, novels, international politics, and western natural sciences reflects the prevailing taste of provincial scholars.
His collection comprises mostly wood block printings from Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo, while some are wood types and handwritten transcripts. These works display the propagation of the central publishing culture. Various Chinese versions reflect the progress of circulating Chinese literature in Japan and the books showing the book marketing in Nagano region provides the detailed view of the provincial book circulation in those times.
