Abstract
DC grid is emerging as a new electric power distribution concept for several types of vessels due to its higher fuel efficiency compared to the conventional AC grid. Until today, wound rotor generator (WRG) and diode rectifier (DFE) have been applied to the generation part of the onboard DC grid, and this conventional configuration has an advantage of low installation cost. In this dissertation, it was proposed to apply permanent magnet generator (PMG) and DFE intead of the conventional configuration. The advantage of the proposed system is that it is more efficient and reliable than the conventional system.
The main reason why the proposed system has not been studied in detail before despite the advantages of the PMG is that it was considered the optimal-efficient operation of the engine, which is the main advantage of the DC distribution system, must be sacrificed in order to control the DC voltage in the proposed system. In this dissertation, considering that most standard documents regarding the DC distribution system allow ± 10 % tolerance for the steady-state voltage, it has been shown that the engine can be operated along the OOL in most load conditions even with the proposed system. Then, it has been shown that by applying the proposed system the fuel consumption is reduced by about 70 ~ 90 tons per year, which is the same to 45,000 to 65,000 dollars per year in terms of cost, for a 5 MW class genset.
In this dissertation, the proposed system is approximated to an AC circuit to analyze the effect of the generator parameter, such as back EMF and inductance, on the operational area of the genset. And, the validity of the theoretical analysis was verified through computer simulation and small-scaled experimental test. In addition, the protection method of the proposed system was proposed and verified through computer simulation. Also, the voltage peak limiter (VPL) circuit for suppressing overvoltage, parallel operation control based on the V-P droop method, PMS functions such as switchboard synchronization was discussed and verified by computer simulation and small-scaled experimental tests.
Furthermore, it was proposed that the DC power system be designed to allow the DC voltage deviation by several tens of percent while adopting the proposed combination for the generation part (PMG and DFE). Then, it was shown that during most of the operation time, not only the efficiency of the load converter was increased, but also the efficiency of the genset was even more improved since the proposed design resulted in the wider operational speed range of the genset.
