사물을 통한 세상 개입하기

Abstract

나는 주변에서 볼 수 있는 익숙한 풍경에 질문을 던지고, 일상의 사 물을 통해 세상에 개입할 수 있는 작업을 연구해왔다. 사물은 삶의 실제 속에서 쓸모와 유용성을 목적으로 존재하지만, 사회적 산물의 차원으로 접근한다면 사회의 크고 작은 문제와 개인의 역사와 함께 엉켜있다. 생 산과 유통이 국경과 지역을 넘어서 이루어지는 오늘날에는 창작자와 최 종향유자뿐만 아니라 자본과 이데올로기까지도 사물의 쓸모에 관여된다.

이 연구에서 나는 이러한 사물의 다면성에 대한 관심이 어떤 동기와 과정을 거쳐 사회적 영역으로 확장될 수 있는지 시도해본다. 우선 현장 을 내밀하게 관찰한 후, 포착한 주제를 함축할 수 있는 사물을 정한다. 그리고 그 사물의 동시대적 맥락 및 주제와의 개연성, 사물이 만들어지 는 과정에 집중하고, 이것을 작업의 직접적인 소재로 사용하거나 그 사 물을 제작하는 과정을 거친다. 완성된 결과물은 주제를 돋보일 수 있는 요소와 함께 설치되어 사물이 본래 품고있던 인상을 낯설게 드러낸다. 혹은 화이트큐브를 벗어나 다시 현장에 노출되어 현실세계에 개입한다.

이 연구에서의 결과물은 반지, 목걸이, 브로치 등의 장신구(<모방과 속임수>, <베트남 프로젝트>), 향꽂이(<귤쨈, 마그마>), 액자(<흙을 돌보는 시간>) 등 실제로 사용할 수 있는 사물이거나 현장에서 건진 인터뷰와 액세서리가 만들어지는 과정을 편집한 단채널 비디오(<새들은 날기 위해 머리를 없앤다>)이다. 액세서리, 귤, 액자와 같은 사소한 소재를 통해 소 비피라미드와 대량생산시스템과의 충돌을 시도했고, 을지로 재개발, 외 할아버지의 치매 등 나와 밀접한 소재에 대한 반응으로 주제를 심화시키 고자 하였다.

I have questioned at familiar sceneries that can be found around us, and researched works to get involved with world through daily objects. An object exists for the use or utility, but as a social product it is tangled with small and big problems and ones personal history. Today, production and distribution are made across the border and region, and not only the creator and the consumer but also capital and ideology influence the objects use.

In this study, I attempt to expand my interest in an objects various facets into social sphere through certain motives and process. After observing a site, I choose an object that implies a subject. Then I focus on the production process and contemporaneity in context or probability of the object. This has become an immediate material or process of my final works. The completed works are presented with the subject and radiate unfamiliar impression at the same time.

The results of this research, <Imitation & Deception> and <Vietnam Project> (the jewelry works such as rings, necklaces, brooches, etc.), <Mandarine jam, Magma> (the incense holder), and <Time to Care for Soil> (the frames) are the objects can be found and used in our lives. The video work <The Birds Trashed Their Heads to Fly> is obtained by recording an interview or progress of producing jewelry pieces. I endeavored to express conflicts between consumption pyramid and mass production system by using daily materials such as accessory, mandarin and frames. Furthermore, by deriving audiences response, I attempted to deepen my intimate subjects, such as re-development in Euljiro and dementia of my grandfather.
