Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore and discuss whether praxial music education suggests proper directions and methods for citizenship education, which has recently been vigorously discussed in the educational world, with focusing on Music Matters 2 by David Elliott who argues that music education as actual participation can cultivate 'artistic citizenship' on the basis of communication and empathy. This study explores three research questions, 'What is the philosophical foundation of praxial music education?', 'What is the pedagogical structure of praxial music education made of?', and 'What is the value of praxial music education in terms of citizenship education?' Based on these, the present researcher derives the objectives, contents, methods and values of praxial music education.
Investigation into the philosophical foundation is conducted on the basis of philosophical inquiry into 'praxis' and 'music.' Praxis, which means 'action,' implies that human behavior and attitude are ethically practiced by phronesis, which is practical knowledge. Thus, praxis in praxial music education is connected to citizenship education that puts into practice social and ethical actions through music, not staying at the musical actions of 'to perform' and 'musicing.' Therefore, praxial music education views music as action, not as fixed object, and this viewpoint leads to viewing humans, who create and express music, and the world together, not music alone. Viewing music as action requires cognition based on the body and action. And relying on enactivism, a branch of embodied cognition, Elliott describes that praxial music education is carried out to create common meaning through the interaction of the body, action, and environment.
The pedagogical structure of praxial music education consists of deriving the goal, contents, and methods of praxial music education, based on the analysis of Music Matters 2. Praxial music education, which has action as its key element, reveals that its goal is to know, express, and communicate emotions inherent in music, with emphasis on emotion arising from action; and suggests as an education method the participatory music consisting of actual musicing and listening, by emphasizing that 'knowledge (musical thinking and knowing), activities (musicing and listening), and products (musical products),' which form the contents of praxial music education, are learned and expressed with the body and action. In short, praxial music education as education of emotion pursues an in-depth understanding of artistic, social, and cultural contexts, on the basis of the learning process of personally performing, reflecting, discussing, and judging knowledge required for actual musicing and listening. And this expands the direction and value of praxial music education from music to society, thereby establishing a foothold as citizenship education.
Then, what is the value of praxial music education in terms of citizenship education? The present researcher intends to categorize the value of citizenship education into 'self,' 'connection to others,' and 'artistic citizenship,' and derives values according to them. Participatory music pursued by praxial music education premises practice. Practice in music is a process for self-expression by means of music. And learners form self-expression and self-understanding by expressing emotions, feelings, gestures, and symbols inherent in music through their own musical actions; and educe the growth of self through self-fulfillment and self-esteem, by flowing on practice for a long time with repetition, change, reflection, and judgment. Relying on T. Turino who interprets practice in music as 'habit that expands one's own existence by continuous experience, thinking, feeling, and acting during interaction between the body and environment, Elliott argues that habit developed by music can form not only an individual's identity, but also the identity of society and culture to which the individual belongs. That is, we can participate in the world by acquiring habit through interaction with the world where we live, and form relationships with others and the world on the basis of it. Thus, habit in music becomes the foundation on which musical self can grow into social self.
Like this, my practicing and participating in music through actual actions bring together me and others in society, to which I and music belong, to be connected in relationships, and it is empathy that acts as the cornerstone of the connection at this time. Here, the present researcher examines how empathy can be learned from praxial music education and what values of citizenship education the empathy can elicit. The understanding and expression of various emotions inherent in praxial music require musical imagination that can reveal the body and action creatively and expressively according to musical situations and contexts. Since musical imagination characterized as being contextual and embodied-enactive can understand and control multi-layered emotions encountered in life, empathy that enables us to feel and understand others' emotions, thoughts, situations, and moods can be learned with musical imagination. And relying on the 'moral imagination' of Mark Jonson, an ethicist of experientialism, the present researcher argues that empathy learned with musical imagination can progress towards moral imagination that can understand and care about others' emotions and attitudes. It is in transition to empathy through emotional experience in various contexts and situations that musical imagination expands into moral imagination. And musical imagination in praxial music education has learners experience detailed emotions according to musical contexts, and thus can help learners have emotions suitable to various situations encountered in life and behave according to them.
But empathy itself does not become ethics by itself, and so the present researcher discusses conditions for empathy to become ethics, and examines whether praxial music education can satisfy such conditions. Empathy being practiced as ethics assumes that I enter, that is, participate in the situations and contexts of others. In this participatory situation, I and other are not divided into the subject and the object, but form intersubjectivity. Therefore, empathy for ethics premises the situation of intersubjectivity where my body participates in other's situation, not being subjected to the contagion of other's emotion. At this time, each subject forms empathy amidst differences between them, while maintaining their own subjectivity, not being immersed in each other.
Praxial music education premises intersubjectivity by requiring every learner to participate actively and creatively in musicing and listening. And in the process of creating and listening to music together, participants try to achieve musical harmony by changing their own music or modifying other's music to the extent that their own and other performers' music or expression does not collapse. Thus, it may safely be said that the participatory musicing assumed by praxial music education amount to participants' joint creation of changes and development towards music as harmonious synthesis. Like this, in participatory musicing, performers of autonomy and subjectivity exchange opinions on equal terms with each other, and develop harmonious empathy as they change slightly while maintaining differences. Therefore, the present researcher refers to this empathy as dialectic empathy. Dialectic empathy, which is developed in the process of communicating with, understanding, and coordinating with other participants while maintaining 'me' who have my own centre of gravity, allows participants to understand each other and put themselves in others' shoes by drawing together my world and others' world, not separating them. Individuals who connect with one another on this wise come to pursue the changes and prosperity of the whole world as citizens who form a greater community and a greater world.
Ultimately Elliott discusses artistic citizenship at a global level by connecting art and citizens, which implies that learners educated in music develop the meaning of their life, enter into relations, and further fulfill their responsibilities and obligations as the artistic citizens of the world through music all their life. For this, praxial music education allows students to experience and participate in diverse music around the world during music classes at school and familiarizes students with the music of countries, races, and regions they never encountered or experienced; and expects that students may widen, through music, their interest, understanding and respect regarding themselves, others, and the world.
In these days when social integration is threatened by conflicts and negative emotions arising from various problems of class, gender, region, and race, praxial music education, which pursues the change and growth of humans and community by the medium of music, brings up the important issues of action, emotion, participation, habit, empathy, and responsibilities and obligations, thereby shedding light on a direction for music education to go as citizenship education. The application of praxial music education to the music curriculum of Korea, which aims at the cultivation of global citizenship, requires discussion about improvement in educational conditions such as the enhancement of music teachers' competence, the expansion of music class hours, and administrative and financial support. However, studies on the specific directions and methods of citizenship education within the curriculum of school music education have been insufficient so far. In light of this, Elliott's praxial music education will be valuable in that it can provide a philosophical foundation, directions, and methods for citizenship education.
