Abstract
This study mainly focuses on golf, furthermore, addresses to examine the status and the characteristics of Koreas elite athletic development. Prior discussion pointed to the absolute influence of the family as the main reason for the production of numerous talented golfers in Korea. However, it is necessary to acknowledge that this factor does not only apply in Korea but also, in any other country family support is essential to participate in sports. This study verifies based on players interviews about how Korea has established golf rapidly, even though with a shorter history of golf compared to other countries.
Previous researches have shown that Korean golf has advanced rapidly due to the familys dedicated sacrifice. A modern concept, Golf Daddy, was created to explain this phenomenon and to create a link between family and golf. Parents support both economic and psychological aspects, providing an environment where the player can only focus on golf. Additionally, even for the slightest opportunity to succeed, some parents will sacrifice by giving up their essential job. Furthermore, as if to prove the research, people can easily see that mainly the fathers volunteer to carry players bags, known as caddies in the LPGA events. Especially for the first generation LPGA players, such as Seri Park, who popularized golf, they had limited information and technical resources. Therefore, support from families, especially from the father was critical.
However, in modern society, golf developed its popularity with the advanced and active the golf-related system, therefore it is insufficient to explain Korean golf entirely with the influence of the family. Moreover, not only in Korea but also in many other countries, the influence of the family is the principal factor that can influence players to develop as elite athletes. It is impossible for junior and amateur athletes who are not financially independent to participate in sports without family support.
This study examines the important factors for Korean golfs rapid growth in several contexts; the infrastructure and education systems that Korea as, in addition to the influence of the family described in the previous study. The infrastructure covers the golf infrastructure, including golf facilities, associations, players and accessibility to golf facilities. On the other hand, the golf education system incorporates the Korean golf education system and program that can train players along with the process and the procedures of becoming a professional golfer in Korea. This study compares them with advanced country such as U.S.
Based on the research, the main reasons for the rapid growth and the success of Korean female golfers can be viewed in the following three matters. First, the technical superiority that focuses on the improvement of the basic skills rather than the real game sensation. Second, the intensity of internal competition in Korea is from junior to the professional level. Finally, the influence of family that has been mentioned earlier researches.
