조지 펄의 <Six Etudes> 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 미국 작곡가 조지 펄(George Perle, 1915-2009)의 피아노를 위한 《6개의 연습곡》(Six Etudes, 1973-76)을 분석한 논문이다. 이 작품은 그의 저서 『12음 조성이론』이 출판(1977)되기 직전 작곡된 곡으로 오랜 시간 발전시켜온 자신의 독창적인 이론이 반영되어 있다는 점에서 연구대상으로서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 먼저 펄의 생애와 시기별 작품 경향에 대해 살펴보고 12음 조성 이론을 간략히 소개한 후, 《6개의 연습곡》의 형식을 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 이 작품 안에 있는 전통적인 요소들과 현대적인 요소들을 분류하였으며 연주 시 고려할 사항들을 제안하였다. 《6개의 연습곡》은 6개의 작품 모두 세 부분 형식으로 되어있고, 프레이즈를 구성하는데 있어 전통적인 방식을 취한다. 즉, 모티브의 반복, 동형진행, 특정 음정 구조, 종지에서의 해결 방법 등은 조성음악에서 찾아볼 수 있는 특징이다. 또한, 이 작품에서는 음정의 전위, 역행의 개념을 적용한 부분, 종지에서 화음 대신 음정으로의 해결 등의 새로운 음조직과 박절적 전조, 빈번한 템포 변화 등의 시간적 요소들이 현대적인 기법으로 쓰인 것을 볼 수 있다. 이 논문은 펄의《6개의 연습곡》을 연주하는 피아니스트들에게 작품에 대한 이해와 해석의 발판을 마련해 주고 나아가 펄의 음악 세계를 폭넓게 이해할 수 있도록 도움을 줄 것이다.

This study analyzes 《Six Etudes》 for Piano (1973-76) by an American composer George Perle. 《Six Etudes》 reflects and captures the core components of Perles compositional theory of twelve-tone tonality, and thereby most explicitly presents an exemplar to his theories. This study first briefly examines Perles biography, phases of the musical styles, and some fundamentals of the twelve-tone tonality before analyzing the structures and forms of each etude in 《Six Etudes》. Further, it characterizes the traditional and contemporary aspects, and suggests a performance technique that takes these styles and structures into consideration. The traditional aspect is reflected in phrase composition. For example, each etude is comprised of three parts, and the implementation of techniques such as repetition of motives and sequences, and intervallic structures within phrases can be commonly identified in functional tonalities. The contemporary aspect is reflected in newly transformed compositional techniques, such as the use of inversion of intervals and the application of concept of retrograde. Also, this new technique is found in the resolution in intervals rather than in the harmony of cadences. As for the temporal elements, metric modulation and frequent tempo change contribute to the complexity of this piece. The objective of this study is to provide a guidance to pianists to understand the work of 《Six Etudes》. Through the analysis, the study aims to present a basic framework for interpretation in light of performance, and achieve a wider understanding of Perles musical language.
