황해도굿 일월맞이 사례 비교 연구: 무당의 신령 체험과 의례적 연행의 상호관련성

Abstract

In this essay, I try to explain how a shamans personal experiences with spirits affect the formation of ritual with focus on the performance of Ilwolmaji ritual (a ritual for heavenly gods). The life stories of two shamans, who had learned shamanship from the same spirit-mother, are introduced and their rituals are compared to illustrate the interconnectedness between personal experience and its objectification through ritual performance. Through this research, I show that a Korean shaman is not a simple agent of tradition, rather he(she) acts as a creative negotiator between tradition and his(her) personal experiences with spirits. In addition, I believe, this research contribute to de-constructing the assumed essence of Korean shamanism, and to giving a clue to understand the plurality of modern Korean shamanism.
