'돌다'의 복합동사에 대한 역사적 연구

Abstract

This study aims to account for the historical change of derivation and compounding of verb in Korean, through thorough examination of one verb base, twol-, on the Korean written materials from 15th to 19th century. Chapter 2 reviews basic features of verb twol-. The meaning of twol- is largely divided into 'to rotate'(basic meaning) and 'to change the direction'(secondary meaning). The meanings are reflected to its derived verbs and compounding verbs. Chapter 3 examines the historical change of derived causative verb of twol-. Twolo- and twoli-, the two forms of causative of twol- in middle Korean can be interpreted that twolo- was the main causative verb in middle Korean era, and was replaced by twoli- during modern Korean era. Twolo-, derived by the suffix -o/u-, had the causative usages, such as 'to make change the direction' and 'to make something to spread away' in middle Korean era. After its inflection paradigm collapsed and restructed in 17th century, however, twolu-, the descendant form of twolo-, lost its causative usages and only remained derived meaning such as 'to vomit' or 'to steal.' Meanwhile, twoli-, derived by the suffix -i-, appeared from 16th century, had meanings of 'to alternate' and 'to transmit all over.' Twolli-, the descendant form of twoli- gradually extended its meaning to 'to make something rotate' in 17th century, and 'to make change the direction' in 18th century. It can be admitted as a prototypical causative verb of twol-, after twolli- gained these usages. The direction of meaning extension of twolli- can be interpreted as gaining higher transitivity features. Chapter 4 takes a look at the change of compounding verb of V1(e)V2 constructions of twol-. In V1(e)V2 construction, twol- as V1 means 'to change the direction', and twol- as V2 means 'to circle, to rotate.' The position of verb matters its meaning difference. Also, specific twol- as V2 is now faced grammaticalization by subjectification to modality that shows speaker's negative judgement on the situation. Overall, the components of V1(e)V2 compoundings have shown two conflicting tendencies that one is to become closer in phonological, morphorogical, syntactic, and semantic ways, and the other is to maintain phonological, morphorogical transparency. In Chapter 5, conclusions and discussions of residual matters are presented.

본고는 돌-을 어기로 하는 복합동사의 역사적인 변화를 살펴봄으로써 동사의 파생과 합성을 둘러싼 국어사적 변화를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 15세기에서 19세기에 이르기까지 돌-의 복합동사의 용례를 형태론적, 통사론적, 의미론적으로 면밀히 분석하였다. 돌-은 중세 국어 시기부터 현대에 이르기까지 회전하다라는 기본 의미와 그로부터 파생된 방향을 바꾸다라는 의미를 가진 기본 동사이다. 돌-은 본동사로도 널리 쓰였을 뿐 아니라 파생어와 합성어를 만드는 데에도 활발하게 참여하였다. 3장에서는 돌-의 파생동사인 도-와 돌이- 및 그 후대형들의 역사적인 변화를 다루었다. 돌-의 사동사로 알려진 도-와 돌이-는 공존하였다기보다는 고형의 도-를 신형의 돌이-가 대체한 것이다. 중세 국어 시기 접미사 -/으-에 의하여 파생된 도-는 돌-의 전형적인 사동사로써 방향을 바꾸게 하다, 대상을 두루 전해지게 하다 등의 의미를 담당하였다. 이러한 용법은 17세기까지 나타난다. 17세기 이후 활용 패러다임이 변화하여 르 불규칙 용언으로 재구조화 되어 가는 도르-는 18세기 이후 그 의미 영역이 급격히 축소되어 오늘날에는 토하다, 훔치다 등 파생된 의미 용법만 남게 되었다. 한편, 접미사 -이-에 의하여 파생된 돌이-는 16세기 문헌에서부터 등장하며, 번갈다, 두루 전달하다의 의미 용법을 지녔다. 이후 돌리-로 이어져 17세기에는 회전시키다, 18세기에는 방향을 바꾸게 하다와 같은 의미를 획득하여 점차 돌-의 사동사로서의 역할을 담당하게 되었다. 돌리-가 보이는 이러한 번갈아가다 → 두루 전달하다 → 회전시키다 → 방향을 바꾸다의 의미 확장의 양상은 돌리-가 점차 높은 타동성을 획득해 가는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 4장에서는 돌-이 어기로 참여한 V1(어)V2 구성의 합성동사의 역사적인 변화를 살펴보았다. 대체적으로 근대로 올수록 통사적 합성동사가 많이 나타난다. V1(어)V2에서 돌-이 V1으로 쓰이면 방향을 바꾸다의 의미를 보이며 이러한 합성동사는 중세 국어 시기부터 나타나는 것이 많다. 돌-이 V2로 쓰일 때에는 회전하다의 의미를 보이며 이러한 합성동사는 근대 국어 시기부터 등장하는 것이 많다. 이와 같은 의미의 차이는 움직임 사건을 구성하는 요소인 경로와 움직임과 관련된다. 한편 V2로 쓰인 돌-은 주관화(subjectification)에 의하여 사태에 대한 화자의 부정적인 인식을 나타내는 판단 양태로 문법화가 진행 중이다. 돌-의 합성동사의 역사적인 변화를 통하여 합성동사의 구성 요소들이 점점 더 긴밀해지는 양상을 보이는 것과 더불어 그 구조적 투명성을 확보하려는 반대 방향으로의 흐름도 일어나고 있음을 확인하였다. 5장은 결론과 남은 문제를 제시하였다.
