리노베이션 된 입면의 기호학적 분석을 통한 도시 이미지의 해석

Abstract

건축은 단순히 기능만을 수행하는 물리적인 개체가 아니며, 하나의 상징적 수단이 될 수 있다. 1920-30년대의 모더니즘 시기의 건축은 건물 그 자체를 하나의 상징으로 보았다면, 1960년대부터 포스트모더니즘 시기로 넘어오면서 건물의 요소를 내부공간과 분리하여 건물과는 별도의 상징성을 가진다고 보며 다원론적 가치를 중요시한다. 또한, 모더니즘 시기에 추구하던 순수성과 단순성은 허구라고 지적하며 의미의 위기를 제기한다. 이에 따라 언어학 이론을 도입하여 의미의 창조와 수용을 분석하는 중요한 틀로서 사용한다. 그 중 기호학과 구조주의는 건축 자체가 고유한 의미를 가진 것이 아닌 사회적 협정을 통해 의미가 발전될 수 있다는 관점을 제시한다.(Kate Nesbitt) 건축물에서 사회적 협정은 하나의 관습으로서 작용하며 코드로 읽힌다. 건물의 요소 중 입면은 건물과 외부의 경계에 위치하기 때문에 이는 도시 이미지를 구축하는 중요한 수단이 된다. 입면 이미지는 단순한 시각적 매개체가 아니라 그 속에 역사적, 문화적, 사회적 배경을 하나의 코드로서 공유하며 현시대를 살아가는 사람들과 끊임없이 의사소통한다. 대상지로 선정된 인천 중구는 국제도시로서, 국내외의 다양한 유형의 사람들이 모여 거주지를 형성하는 과정에서 지어진 건물의 입면들은 도시 공간의 다원적 성격을 강하게 드러내며 복합적인 의미를 내포한다. 현재는 입면 위주의 리노베이션을 통해 도시의 이미지를 재구성하고 있는데, 관광위주의 경제 논리에만 입각한 도시재생 방식으로 여겨져 건축가들과 역사가들의 비판을 받고 있다. 하지만 입면을 건축적인 관점 뿐만 아니라, 문화적 상황 속에서 사람들과 소통하고자 하는 기호로서 바라보고 내포하는 의미를 분석할 수 있다면 입면이 만들어내는 도시 이미지를 새로운 관점에서 바라볼 수 있는 여지가 있다. 기호학적으로 분석하기 위해, 도시의 코드를 형성하는 사회 문화적 배경을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 그 변별적 속성들을 파악한다. 이를 바탕으로, 그레마스의 기호사각형을 적용하여 입면이 내포하는 심층구조에서의 의미를 분석한다. 이 과정에서 노암 촘스키의 변형생성이론을 통해 도시 공간을 블록, 거리, 입면으로 단계별 분류가 적용된다. 이는 입면을 이루는 최소단위기호부터, 개별입면 유형 그리고 거리의 입면까지 그 의미의 범위를 확장시킨다. 이러한 단계별 입면의 분석은 도시 공간 속에서 이미지가 형성하는 다양한 의미의 층위를 설명하며, 이들의 조합을 통해 도시의 의미작용의 무한한 발전 가능성을 암시한다. 이는 입면 중심의 리노베이션이 도시 공간의 의미작용에 미치는 영향과 그 가치를 새로운 관점에서 설명할 수 있으며 이를 바탕으로 그 가치와 한계에 대한 담론을 제시하고자 한다.

From the 1960s, the postmodernism period, the purity and simplicity pursued during the modernism period(1920-30s) were pointed out as fiction and raised a 'crisis of meaning'. Accordingly, linguistic theory is introduced and used as an important framework to analyze the creation and acceptance of meaning. Among them, semiotics and structuralism present a view that architecture itself does not have its own meaning, but that meaning can be developed through social agreements. (Kate Nesbitt) In buildings, social agreements acting as a convention is called a 'code'. Among the elements of the building, the image formed by the facade is not a simple visual medium, but sharing the historical, cultural, and social background in it as a 'code' and constantly communicates with people. The facades of the buildings built in the process of forming a residence in Jung-gu, Incheon, which were selected as the target site, strongly reveal the 'pluralistic character' and have a complex meaning. Currently, the image of the city is reconstructed through renovation focused on the facade, and it is considered as a method of urban regeneration based only on the economic logic of tourism, and is being criticized by architects and historians. However, if you look at the facade as a 'sign' to communicate with people from a cultural point of view, and analyze the implied'code', there is room for you to look at it from a different perspective. In order to analyze semiotically, we look at the socio-cultural background that forms the city's code, and grasp its distinctive attributes through this. Based on this, the meaning of the deep structure contained in the facade is analyzed by applying Semiotic Square of Gremas. In this process, step-by-step classification of urban spaces into blocks, streets, and individual building facade is applied through Noam Chomsky's Transformational Generative Grammer. This extends the range of meaning from the smallest unit signl constituting the facade to the individual facade type and the street facade. This step-by-step analysis of the facade explains the layers of various meanings that form in the urban space, and suggests the infinite possibility of developing urban meanings through their combination. It is possible to explain the effect and value of the facade-centered renovation on the meaning of urban spaces from a new perspective, and based on this, it is intended to present a discourse on its value and limitations.
