촛불집회와 민주주의의 세 형상

Abstract

This thesis critically examines previous studies which sought to clarify the relationship between democracy and the 2016-17 Candlelight Demonstration in South Korea – the largest street agitation in that nations history. Under the influence of its underlying conception, or figure, of democracy, I contend that they overlook multifaceted aspects of the demonstration and complex interactions among diverse practices internal to the scene. They too hastily reduce the whole set of actions to a mere case which implies a malfunction of procedural democracy or which indicates the possibility of democracy governed by an immediate presence of the multitude or left populism of the people. These interpretations tacitly posit the figure of circulation as an ideal operation of democracy, which leads them to ignore complexities of the case and consider it as congruous with its presupposed operation of democracy. In contradistinction to these approaches and two figures of democracy – the procedural circulation of mediated people and the direct circulation of immediate people –, I seek to demonstrate the presence of heterogeneous practices intrinsic to street demonstration or mass insurrection by addressing the process of over- and under-determination among several tendencies in the course of the Candlelight Demonstration. I especially focus on the struggles against the discriminatory and exclusionary practices that took place on the street toward other participants and on which previous studies remain silent or give cursory mention. These struggles – such as Femi-Zone seeking to redress sexist tendencies of the demonstration – can be defined as political subjectivation, an action of becoming subject within the process to verify unjustness of the dominant-yet-exclusionary perception of the world and to performatively reconfigure it in more egalitarian ways. By identifying such struggles as the third figure of democracy, this thesis lastly proposes to refigure the prevailing conception of democracy – and its subsequent narrative concerning the repertoire of the Candlelight Demonstration – by which our political imagination is constrained and the future process of political subjectivation is impeded.

이 논문은 2016-17년 촛불집회와 민주주의 사이의 관계를 규명하고 서사를 구축해왔던 학술적 논의들에 대한 비판적 검토를 진행하며, 이들이 촛불집회를 다르게 해석하도록 만드는 민주주의관 또는 민주주의의 형상을 식별한다. 이 과정에서 기존 문헌들이 자신의 형상 아래 집회의 다면성과 내부 실천들 사이의 복잡한 동학을 섣불리 간과하며, 특히 정치적 주체화로 개념화될 수 있는 실천의 고유성을 축소시키는 문제점을 지닌다는 것을 밝힌다. 기존 논의와 달리 집회의 다면성을 복원하고 정치적 주체화라는 민주주의의 세 번째 형상을 통해 집회 현장을 재조명하면서, 이 논문은 우리 존재의 정치적 상상과 행위자성을 제약해오던 촛불집회와 민주주의에 관한 기존 서사를 재구축해야함을 주장한다. 이러한 목적 아래 이 논문은 다음과 같은 순서에 따라 진행된다. 첫 번째로 촛불집회를 분석했던 기존 문헌들의 민주주의관을 크게 매개적 인민의 절차적 순환과 비매개적 인민의 직접적 순환이란 두 가지 형상으로 분류한다. 이들은 서로 다른 민주주의관을 지니고 있음에도 불구하고 민주주의의 이상적인 작동방식을 이미 순환의 형상으로 상정한 상태에서, 촛불집회를 자신의 형상에 걸맞은 사례로 환원하여 재단한다는 공통점을 보인다. 촛불집회는 단지 절차적 민주주의의 비정상적인 작동을 드러내는 증상으로서만 해석되거나 다중 혹은 인민의 민주주의를 실현하기 위한 잠재력을 보여주는 사례로 간주될 뿐이다. 두 번째로 이러한 공통점에 의해 순환의 형상을 취하는 민주주의관들이 집회 현장의 여타 측면들을 간과하면서 집회 내부의 다면성, 그 중에서도 차별과 배제의 동학과 이에 저항했던 정치적 실천의 고유성에 대해 침묵한다는 문제점을 노정한다고 비판한다. 세 번째로 기존 문헌들이 각자 독립적으로 포착했던 다양한 행위자의 모습이 사실 광장에서 공존하고 있었고, 특정한 경향성으로 집회의 전개과정이 과잉 및 과소결정되었음을 강조하며, 순환의 형상에 의해 왜곡되었던 다면적인 집회 현장을 복원한다. 네 번째로 집회 현장에서 이루어졌지만 간과되었던 실천 중 정치적 주체화로 정의될 수 있는 실천들의 고유성에 주목한다. 특히 당시의 페미존 사례가 예증하는 것처럼, 기존 세계의 지배적이며 차별적인 인식이 부당함을 입증하고 이를 재편하려는 정치적 주체화의 과정과 이에 수반되는 수행적 실천 또한 민주주의의 이름을 통해 호명될 수 있음을 제시한다. 마지막으로 촛불집회와 민주주의에 관한 기존 서사를 정치적 주체화를 중심으로 재형상화하는 작업을 예비적으로 진행하며, 우리 스스로의 행위자성을 제약해오던 정치적 상상을 재편하는 것을 통해 정치적 주체화의 전망을 보장할 것을 제안한다.
