Abstract
Entering the global era, hybridization and interculturalism between western music and oriental music have been one of the important streams of music. Bright Sheng (1955~) is a Chinese-American composer and one of the representative figures of the New Wave composers, which indicate renowned Chinese-American composers who are working in America. Shengs opera Dream of the Red Chamber(2016) is remarkable in that it is a multi-layered fusion of East and West culture and music. This thesis starts with the question of how Sheng revealed his bicultural identity in his works. The purpose of this study is to look into in detail the multi-layered, convergent aspects revealed in opera Dream of the Red Chamber, an exquisite hybridity of art culture of East and West
Bright Sheng insists that he is a 100% American and also a 100% Chinese. It expresses his bicultural identity at the core. Dream of the Red Chamber is an opera based on the Chinese novel of the same title. The classical Chinese novel which has been said to represent the spirit of China was reborn as a modern Western opera by David Henry Hwang, the librettist. Dream of the Red Chamber is an opera of two acts and six scenes. It is a two-layered story that the monk, a narrator tells his story to the audiences.
The fusion of Eastern and Western cultures in the works can be seen in three aspects of which are libretto, musical style and drama form. The transformation of Chinese novel into modern Western opera was examined through comparison between libretto and novel. It can be seen that there are differences in the scale of the work, relationship of characters and the aspects of love between Dai-Yu and Bao-Yu. In addition, the most important convergence appearing in libretto is the introduction of Western perspectives to traditional Chinese novel. Specifically, the breakdown of the feudal bios on women, elimination of the predetermined way of thinking and the addition of fantasy instead of the reincarnation were found in the libretto.
Next, this study examined the acceptance and fusion of Chinese music in Dream of the Red Chamber. Sheng enhanced the effect of music by placing Qupais(Qupai is the traditional folk tune of China) or variations of the Qupai in the proper place in the work. Also he made the meaning and context of the Qupai connected with the context of the opera. Specifically, the tune from the Qupai Purple Bamboo Flute was used both in song melody and instrumental melody. And the tune from Courting Phoenixes was used. The musical convergence of Dream of the Red Chamber was intensified by appropriate use of traditional Chinese musical instruments with the Western orchestra. Furthermore, Sheng used the musical cultural symbol of the Chinese musical instrument to elevate the cultural status of the character. In addition, Western instruments were used to create the effect of Chinese folk instruments. Sheng also made the Chinese sound and the Western orchestra sound colliding to insinuate the miserable accident to come.
Lastly, the influence of the Chinese Peking Opera in Dream of the Red Chamber was discussed. It was found that narrative frame of Dream of the Red Chamber is similar to that of Peking Opera. The conventional types of characters in Peking Opera were also used in In Dream of the Red Chamber. Sheng took one step further and expressed the types of characters in Peking Opera musically. In this study, the character of the protagonists and the type of melody given to them were analyzed. In addition, in Dream of the Red Chamber, it was revealed that the percussions of the Peking Opera were properly harmonized with the Western orchestra, effectively contributing to the unfolding of the play.
Considering these points comprehensively, it could be seen that Sheng successfully merged the two cultures of the East and the West in Dream of the Red Chamber. An important concept that emerges in the fusion of two disparate cultures is interculturality. Interculturality focuses on equal relations between heterogeneous cultures. There would inevitably arise tensions between diversity and universality. In order to alleviate this tension, interculturalism make 'third space' an important point. The strategy of filling third space could be different for each composer who attempts to fusion Eastern and Western music.
It seems that Sheng revealed his dual cultural identity in the third space using various strategies. Still we should admit that when different cultures meet, there cannot be no perfect convergence. We can see that in the convergence of Dream of the Red Chamber. However, it shows intercultural characteristics in that it attempts to overcome the prejudice and heterogeneity between different cultures.
If we apply this study to contemporary Korean opera, libretto based on Korean traditional literature could become more desirable with some involvement of Western culture. Regarding a way to integrate Korean music, the melody of the Korean traditional folk song can be used as motives in operas. Also the characteristic voice of Pansori could be partly used. And singing style of Korean Gagok could be applied in comtemporary Korean opera. It is possible to build up contrasting sounds between Korean traditional court music and folk music. As Sheng utilize the Peking Opera in his work, Korean composers could also make use of the factors from Yeonheekuk, the Korean theatrical comedy. I hope this study will serve as a meaningful example that stimulates creativity for Korean composers living in the 21st century.
