Abstract
Since the 20th century, the use of music in art has increased
due to the emergence of installation arts using mixed media as the
main form of contemporary Arts. Among them, South African
installation artist William Kentridge(1955- ) is a representative artist of
contemporary arts who actively drew music to the arts, and his
Installation works with composer Philip Miller(1964- ), using various
styles of music such as instrumental music, songs, and noise. The music
in Kentridge's work serves as an important factor in understanding the
work through clear progression of music such as motifs, scale, and
melodies. Nonetheless, existing studies have focused only on the visual
phenomenon of installation arts in Kentridge, or described the music
used as soundscape or sound collage as an aid to vision. Is it possible
to explain Kentridge's installation art without music? What is the role
- 119 -
of music in Kentridge's installation art works and what is the meaning
created there?
This study selected Felix in exile(1994), Black Box(2005), and
The Refusal of Time(2012), which are considered Kentridge's
representative works, and presented new interpretations of the function
and meaning of the music in the work. In Kentridge's installation arts
work, music presents a new type of music theater by forming narratives
of the work and playing a key role in the work. This can be identified
through three perspectives: leitmotif's strategy, music theater, and
Gesamtkunstwerk.
First, music in Kentridge's installation art plays a major role in
delivering the narrative of the work through leitmotif techniques and
making the play readable. The leitmotif used in the music played a
leading role in conveying the narrative of the play, playing along with
the fragmented video to recognize the narrative content inherent in the
work.
Second, in the work, music plays a key role in shaping the
narrative, presenting a new type of musical play that combines music
and drama. The work presents the work to the audience by presenting
the exhibition hall as a stage space and conveys the contents of the
play using lyrics such as songs, recitativo, lecture, ensembles, and arias.
Here, music plays a role in making the work a play with narrative,
giving specific messages to visual media and each element. In other
words, music takes the lead in the narrative and shapes the work as a
play, thus providing the basis for identifying the work as an expanded
music theater.
Third, the installation arts of Kentridge, which combines various
genres of art, presents a possibility as a comprehensive art. Kentridge's
work considered the probability of the play in selecting musical
- 120 -
elements such as sound materials and composition, such as Wagner's
Gesamtkunstwerk, and pursued the comprehensive ideals of various
media in the work by participating in the overall production of music,
video, poem, and work. However, unlike Wagner's pursuit of a
mythical ideal world, Kentridge's installation works attempted to
integrate history and society by dealing with the subject matter of
history and reality. This reflects historical events in the work and brings
out critical considerations from the audience.
Kentridge's installation arts used leitmotif to present a new type
of music theater, demonstrating its potential as Gesamtkunstwerk. This
suggests a new type of music based on aesthetics and techniques that
art music has traditionally pursued in art galleries, indicating that the
use of music in contemporary arts is changing. In addition, it presents a
demarcation line between contemporary art divided into arts and music,
and a new type of art in the 21st century as a Gesamtkunstwerk
implemented through digital media.
