흙을 이용한 빛의 표현

Abstract

The subjects of the present thesis are my own artworks between 2013 and 2020 that express light by using soil. The present thesis is directed to the research of artworks to review the motivation of using soil to express light and the meaning of light and soil in the artworks, and analyze the formative expressions based on the materiality of soil, presenting my artworks systematically.

The natural surroundings provide rest and render places of living. Observing the beauty of light found in lakes, seas, night sky and forest, which are enjoyed in the daily life, the I used to contemplate on the invisible divinity inherent in the beauty. In this process, the I expressed the transcendental world revealed by the nature and the perpetual world of light that humans desire to reach by making artworks based on soil. In this thesis, I review how soil is embodied as light and represent the formative characteristics. The purpose of this study is to explore through the aesthetic and philosophical theories the meaning that soil, a source of materials, draws from the nonmaterial light, and to analyze the formativeness configured by the simple and planar composition of the artworks and the materiality of soil. The present thesis describes the study, as shown below.

Chapter I is the introduction that reviews the purpose of this thesis and the basic essentials of art. The background of my artworks that express light by means of soil and the meaning of soil in the artworks are briefly reviewed, and the directions of the research are established. Chapter II, entitled Light Experiences in the Nature, describes my viewpoint toward the beauty of the nature and light and the essentials behind the objects, briefly reviewing the Asian and Western authors having a similar viewpoint as well as their theories. Subsequently, the images felt from light, and the meanings of life, god and sacrifice, symbolized by the beauty of light, are discussed and interpreted from various viewpoints, including scientific, philosophical, aesthetic and theological points of view. Chapter III, entitled Expression of light by soil, describes my motivation of using soil as the material for the artworks as well as the developmental process of the artworks, explaining the material meanings and symbolism of soil, which is a metaphor of my ideas regarding life, death and universe. The chapter also explores the process of discovering the light of internal truth through the tranquility led by the thoughts about soil, and discusses the meanings of the action of sowing light, likening light to seeds. Chapter IV, entitled Formative features and material techniques, investigates the source of the simple and planar characteristics of my artworks from oriental arts. In addition, the formative expression of physical properties is found from the contemporary arts, and the forms that are spontaneously generated by the properties of soil on the surfaces of my artworks are investigated. After that, the chapterdescribes the process of producing the artworks, including the dripping technique. Chapter V is the conclusion that as a comprehensive summary of theentire thesis, reviews the significance of the expression of light based on soil, and describes the future directions and tasks.

The present study was directed to my identity, which is realized by using soil as the principal material of my artworks in the middle of the arts of our times when the entire world has been globalized and enjoyed material prosperity. The significance of the study is to search for the unfailing values that humans should ultimately seek through arts beyond the culture and time expressed by artworks.

본 논문은 2013년부터 2020년까지 흙을 이용하여 빛을 표현한 나의 작품들을 연구대상으로 하고 있다. 빛을 표현하기 위해 흙을 이용한 동기와 작품에서 빛과 흙이 가진 의미를 고찰하고, 흙의 물성을 통한 조형적 표현을 분석하여 나의 작품을 체계적으로 제시하기 위한 작품 연구 논문이다.

우리를 둘러싸고 있는 자연환경은 우리에게 안식을 제공하고, 삶의 터전을 내어준다. 일상에서 누리는 호수, 바다, 밤하늘, 그리고 숲에서 빛의 아름다움을 관조하며 이에 내재한 비가시적인 신성을 사색하곤 하였다. 이 과정에서 자연이 계시하는 초월적 세계와 인간이 도달하고자 하는 영원한 빛의 세계를 흙을 이용하여 작품으로 표현하였다. 나의 작품에서 흙이 어떻게 빛으로 형상화되며 그 조형적 특징을 드러내는지 살펴보고자 한다. 물질의 근원이 되는 흙이 비물질적인 빛을 어떤 의미로 끌어내는지 미학적, 철학적 이론들을 통하여 탐구하고, 단순하고 평면적인 작품의 구도와 흙의 물성이 이루는 조형성을 분석적으로 연구하는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 본논문에서 그 과정을 다음과 같이 서술하였다.

I 장 머리말에서는 본 논문의 목적과 예술의 원초적 본질을 살펴보며 논문을 시작하였다. 흙을 작품의 재료로 이용한 창작 배경과 작품에서 흙과 빛이 가진 의미에 대해 간략하게 짚어보고 연구 방향을 설정하였다. II 장 자연에서 경험한 빛에서는 자연과 빛의 아름다움과 대상의 이면에 있는 본질을 바라보는 자연에 대한 나의 관점을 기술하고, 유사한 관점을 가진 동서양의 작가와 이론을 거론하였다. 이어서 빛을 통해 느낀 심상을 서술하고 빛의 아름다움이 상징하는 생명, 신, 그리고 희생의 의미에 대해 과학적, 철학적, 미학적, 그리고 신학적인 다방면의 시각으로 연구하고 해석해보았다. III 장 흙을 통한 빛의 표현에서는 흙을 작업의 재료로 이용하게 된 동기와 작품의 발전과정을 함께 살펴보며 생명과 죽음, 우주에 관한 나의 관념을 은유하는 흙의 물질적 의미와상징에 대해 설명하였다. 흙의 사유가 이끄는 고요함을 통하여 내면에 있는 진실의 빛을 발견하는 과정을 철학적 이론을 기반으로 탐구하고, 빛을 씨앗에 비유하여서 뿌리듯 표현한 행위의 의미를 논하였다. IV 장 조형적 특징과 재료기법에서는 나의 작품에서 드러나는 단순하고 평면적인 특징을 동양 미술에서 그 근원을 분석해보았다. 또한 현대미술에서 물성의 조형적 표현을 찾아보고, 나의 작품에서 흙의 물성이 화면 위에서 스스로 자아내는 형상과 뿌리기 기법에 대해 현대미술 작가들의 사상과 작품을 참고하며 살펴보았다. V 장 맺음말에서는 본문에서 논한 내용을 총체적으로 되짚어 보고, 흙을 이용한 빛의 표현 의의를 살펴보며 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향과 과제에 관해 서술하였다.

본 연구는 모든 세계가 글로벌화되고 물질적 풍요를 누리는 동시대 미술에서 흙을 작품의 주된 재료로 이용함으로써 나를 증명하는 정체성에 대해 연구하고, 작품에서 표현하고 있는 문화와 시대를 초월하여 인간이 예술을 통하여 궁극적으로 추구해야 할 영원한 가치를 모색하는데 의의와 중요성이 있다.
