젊은 세대의 결혼과 출산에 대한 태도 비교 연구

Abstract

기존에 있는 한국의 결혼 및 출산율에 관한 연구는 일반적으로 한국인의 태도와 이러한 태도의 원인에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 정부의 끊임없는 노력에도 불구하고 한국은 혼인율과 출산율이 지속적으로 감소하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 한국과 싱가포르의 결혼과 출산에 대한 상황을 비교해 기존 연구와는 다른 관점을 취했다. 이 문제에 대한 국가별 비교 연구가 존재하지만 대부분 동아시아 국가를 중점적으로 비교하고 있다. 이 연구는 한국-싱가포르 양국을 집중적으로 비교하고 정부 정책과 같은 외부 요인이 청년들의 결혼과 출산 결정에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지에 대해 파악하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 연구에서는 한국 청년 13명 및 싱가포르 청년 13명과의 심층 면접을 진행하였으며, 그 결과 양국에서 결혼과 출산에 대한 태도에 유사한 변화가 있음을 발견했다. 이는 학력 향상, 사회 분위기 변화 등 여러 가지 이유 때문이다. 그러나 결혼과 출산에 대한 태도가 비슷하게 변 화함에도 불구하고 한국의 결혼 연령이 높아지는 비율은 싱가포르에 비해 큰 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 양국 간의 추가 분석 결과, 이러한 현상은 한국 청년들의 결혼에 대한 부정적인 태도가 주된 원인이 아니라는 사실이 밝혀졌으며 오히려 한국에서 이러한 삶의 결정에 더 크게 영향을 미치는 것은 외부 경제적, 사회적 요인으로 나타났다. 일부 외부 요인으로는 결혼과 출산에 필요한 막대한 비용, 가족의 지원 부족, 그리고 미디어의 부정적인 역할 등이 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 단순히 한국인의 태도에 초점을 맞추지 않고 결혼과 출산에 영향을 미치는 외부 요인에 초점을 맞추는 것이 중요하다는 것을 강조한다.

Studies on marriage and fertility rates in Korea have usually focused on the attitudes of Koreans and the reasons behind these attitudes. Despite constant governmental efforts in an attempt to solve this problem, Korea has been observing a constant decline in marriage and fertility rates. Therefore, this paper took a different perspective by comparing Koreas situation with Singapores. Although there have been comparative studies that have been done on this issue, most focused on East Asian countries. This research aims to provide a focused comparison of both countries and highlight the influence external factors like economic factors have on young adults decision for marriage and childbirth. Through in-depth interviews with 13 Korean and 13 Singaporean young adults, this study found that there was a similar shift in attitudes towards marriage and childbirth in both countries. This was a result of different reasons like rising educational attainment, changing societal atmosphere etc. However, despite similar shifts in attitudes towards both marriage and fertility, it was found that there was a large difference in the rate at which Koreas age of marriage was increasing compared to Singapore. With further analysis between both countries, it was found that it was not due to the decrease in desirability of marriage. Rather, there were external economic and societal factors which are affecting these life decisions in Korea. Some external factors include the exorbitant costs needed for marriage and childbirth, the lack of family support and the negative role of media in Korea. This paper hence highlights the importance for the focus on these external factors affecting both marriage and childbirth instead of simply focusing on Koreans attitudes.
