찻잔에 담긴 오늘의 의미 표현 연구

Abstract

This study is to organize and analyze my work from my undergraduate years to now. This is based on the theme consciousness about meaning of today that including the material and techniques for the representation of my paintings since 2012. Although the concept of time associated with our lives is often referred to as daily life, this can actually be quite a vague choice of word. People in a busy modern society only perceive time as a guideline for a living, so today often disappears when yesterday's plan is ahead. I want to analyze the concept of time about present that modern people easily spend to achieve own goals for tomorrow so reflect the meaning of today on this study. This is because of the atmosphere in modern society, where it seems more important to be a proper member of social community than to do one's duty so I am trying to evoke the subject, myself. Among the other units of time, especially redefining the concept of today does not just make me aware of the mathematical results, but also allows me to understand the precise present time also the space surrounding me. This is a metaphorical approach to the view of the purpose driven life in modern society to find the essential meaning and to visualize it. In Chapter Ⅰ. based on the sense of motivation, introduce the basis of the studys purpose and contents that led us to pay attention to today's meaning. In Chapter Ⅱ. beginning with the main point, this study is intended to examine meaning and concept of today. The first section is Concept of Today, through the advent and application of the concept of time, it is a part of revealing the importance of today and how today is perceived in modern society and how it plays a social role. The second section is Meaning of Today, through todays concept of time could suggest each of the values are summarized in two ways. The first is Today as a time of subjectivity. It means recognizing the present concept of today can be the beginning of restoring my identity to myself. This is based on the view that today is not just a passing time, but a time that I act and sense independently. The second is Today as a time of possibility. This is about todays potential and the process of discovering it. This involved research and analysis of existing studies and cases from art history to philosophy. In Chapter Ⅲ, its a part of expressing the two meanings of today that recognized above through the teacups in my painting. Especially Laozi(老子)s The Tao Teh King(道德經), there is a sentence about a Tao. It was a major trigger to choose teacups as a painting material mainly. Indeed in my paintings, to discuss how teacups play two kinds of roles above, as a suitable material for conveying the meaning of today, the experiences of my works and exhibitions were composed together in this chapter. In Chapter Ⅳ, analyzing the characteristics and contents of the formative features in my paintings about meaning of today. To deal with the meaning into paintings, in terms of expression techniques present below : presentation of planar images, longitudinal compositions and dyeing skills. The method of each technique being used was confirmed through the paintings. In Chapter Ⅴ, as the last part of this study, in this part I summarized the main points and described my paintings. To combine my own ideas and materials, this study supposed to examine my overall work, and to know the direction to go forward.

본 논문은 오늘의 의미를 찻잔을 통해 시각화 하고자 하는 회화 연작에 대한 연구이다. 특히 오늘을 중심으로 하여 다양한 시간에 대한 개념을 이해하고, 오늘의 관점에서 주체적인 삶과 현실에의 태도를 시각적으로 표현하고자 작품을 제작하였다. 해당 연작은 2012년 서울대학교 미술대학 동양화과 학사 졸업 전시를 위한 작업을 시작으로 현재까지 전통 동양화 기법의 회화로 제작되었다. 오늘이라는 단위는 시간을 뜻하는 다양한 단위들 중 하나이다. 현재을 뜻하는 단위만 해도 여럿인데, 그 중 오늘이라는 특정한 시간에 근거하는 이유는 나라는 존재가 생각한 바를 바로 반영할 수 있는 유일한 시간대이기 때문이다. 나는 오늘 나 자신의 행동을 통하여 새로운 감각을 경험하고, 이 감각을 통하여 사유 할 수 있다. 회화라는 매체를 통해 순간적이고 일상적인 경험에서 시작되는 주체적인 나의 시간을 시각화하면서, 본질적이면서도 새로운 시간개념으로서 가능성도 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 철학적, 회화적 관점에서 나의 작품이 가진 의의와 한계를 고찰하는 것이다. 그를 위해 작품의 바탕이 되는 오늘이라는 개념을 정리하고, 이를 위해 현실과 사회에 통용되는 시간개념에 대하여 정의한 기존 학자들의 개념을 살펴본다. 작품의 주제인 오늘은 대다수 기존 학자들의 연구에서는 일상을 중심으로 전개되었기 때문에, 나는 이것을 바탕으로 하지만 새로이 오늘의 의미를 구별하고 삶으로까지 연장될 수 있는 관점을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 통해 나는 오늘이 가지는 의미와 가치에 대해 찻잔을 통해 형상화하고 나의 오늘을 시각화 하는 그 방식까지 아울러 설명하고자 한다.

본 논문은 Ⅰ.머리말, Ⅱ.오늘의 의미, Ⅲ.오늘의 의미를 담은 찻잔 표현, Ⅳ.조형적 특성. Ⅴ.맺음말로 구성 되어 있다.

Ⅰ장에서는 사회적인 문제의식을 바탕으로 오늘의 의미에 주목하게 된 연구 계기와 내용에 대한 바탕을 소개한다. Ⅱ장은 오늘이라는 시간개념에 대하여 이해하는 장이다. 1절 오늘의 개념에서는 작품에서 사용된 오늘이라는 개념에 대해 구체적인 의미를 찾아본다. 2절 오늘의 의미에서는 이를 통해 오늘의 시간개념이 시사할 수 있는 가치를 각각 정리하였다. 특히 1항 주체적인 시간으로서의 오늘에서는 자기 자신이 중심이 될 때 비롯되는 오늘의 의미에 대해, 2항 가능성의 시간으로서의 오늘에서는 1항을 바탕으로 반복되는 매일이 아닌 새로이 주어지는 오늘로써의 의미에 대해 이야기 하고자 한다. Ⅲ장의 오늘의 의미를 담은 찻잔 표현은 위에서 알아본 오늘의 의미를 실질적인 작업으로 가져오는 것에 대해 이야기 하는 장이다. 1절 주체적인 오늘을 담은 찻잔에서는 먼저 찻잔이 오늘의 의미를 전달하기에 적합한 매개체로써 어떻게 역할하는지 먼저 논하였다. 그리고 찻잔이라는 소재를 통하여 나의 작품에서 나라는 존재와 그로 인한 경험, 일상적인 성찰에 기반하는 것을 들어 주체성을 논하였다. 그리고 이러한 주체성이 특히 드러난 작가와 작품을 들어 연구의 근거로 삼았다. 2절 가능성의 오늘을 담은 찻잔에서는 오늘의 잠재력에 대하여 이러한 의미가 해석되는 방식을 논하였다. 이것은 오늘에서 시작되는 시간 경험으로 하여금 일상, 그리고 생애시간에 끼치는 영향력에까지 관여한다. 각 주제에 해당하는 작업 내용을 각각의 항의 이름으로서 하여 분류하였고, 실제로 작업에 어떻게 적용 되었는지 서로 다른 다양한 내용으로 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 이는 나의 세계관이 회화적으로 펼쳐질 때, 작품에서 오늘이라는 시간이 어떻게 녹아있는지, 회화적으로 충실히 표현할 수 있었는지 살펴보고자 함이다. 각각의 항은 연구 기간 동안의 세 번의 개인전 경험과 다수의 단체 전시 경험을 반영한다. Ⅳ장에서는 작품에서 드러난 조형적 특징에 대하여 자세히 정리하였다. 실제 작품의 조형미와 표현 방식을 분석하고 최종적으로 작업의 방향을 점검해본다. 이것은 1절의 평면적 이미지, 2절의 종적 집적(集積) 이미지와 병렬구도, 3절의 선염으로 나누어 세부적으로 접근할 수 있도록 하였다. 이것은 작업의 특징이기도 하면서 앞서 이야기 한 오늘의 의미를 표현하기 위한 수단으로써, 작품에서 실제로 어떻게 적용되고 드러났는가를 확인할 수 있다. Ⅴ장은 맺음말로 여기서는 본론의 내용을 요약하고 이를 통해 연구의 큰 흐름을 서술하고 있다.

본 연구는 상당한 시간에 걸쳐 다양하게 접근된 연구 주제를 정리하고 그 이론적 토대를 강화하고자 했다. 이론적 점검과 표현적 고찰을 통하여 나의 작업을 점검하고자 하는 의도도 있다. 이번 연구를 통해 일상과 삶을 관통하여 바라보는 시각으로써의 오늘의 가치를 짚어보고, 나의 작업에 있어 궁극적으로 추구하는 바를 정확히 알고 앞으로도 흔들림 없이 밀고 나아가고자 했다.
