클라라 슈만(Clara Schumann)의 <Sechs Lieder, Op. 13)>와 에이미 비치(Amy Beach)의 <Three Browning Songs, Op. 44> 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 독일의 여성 작곡가 클라라 슈만(Clara Wieck Schumann, 1819–1886)의 작품 <여섯 개의 가곡(Sechs Lieder, Op. 13)>과, 미국의 여성 작곡가 에이미 비치(Amy Marcy Cheney Beach, 1867–1944)의 작품 <세 개의 브라우닝 노래(Three Browning Songs Op. 44)>에 관한 연구이다. 클라라 슈만은 19세기 낭만시대에 유럽에서 활동한 유명한 피아니스트이자 작곡가로, 유럽의 여성 음악가들 중 큰 성공을 거둔 인물 가운데 한 사람이다. 또한 에이미 비치 역시 미국 음악사에 피아니스트 겸 작곡가로 이름을 남긴 저명한 여성 음악가이다. 그러나 클라라 슈만과 에이미 비치의 명성과 업적에 비해 이 작곡가들과 이들의 작품에 관한 연구가 활발하지 않고, 더더욱 다른 여류 작곡가들에 대한 연구는 수많은 선행 연구들이 존재하는 남성 작곡가들에 비해서 현저히 적은 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 먼저 서양 음악사 속 여성 작곡가들의 전체적인 흐름을 살펴보고, 그 중에서도 두 명의 작곡가 클라라 슈만과 에이미 비치의 대표적인 가곡 작품 <여섯 개의 가곡(Sechs Lieder, Op. 13)>과 <세 개의 브라우닝 노래(Three Browning Songs Op. 44)>에 대해서 분석하여 고찰하며 작품의 배경도 함께 알아보고자 한다. 이 연구를 통해 클라라 슈만의 <여섯 개의 가곡>은 클라라 슈만이 덴마크의 여왕에게 헌정하기 위해 작곡했던 작품이며, 그녀가 낭만주의 음악의 전통에 충실한 작곡가였던 것에 비해 이 작품은 낭만주의적 특성이 크게 두드러진다기보다는 형식과 기법, 반주형 등이 대체로 간결하고 평이하게 작곡된 작품이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 이와는 대조적으로 미국 출신의 작곡가 에이미 비치의 중기 가곡 작품인 <세 개의 브라우닝 노래>에서는 유럽 낭만주의의 영향을 받은 에이미 비치가 잦은 변박과 템포 변화, 반음계적 선율 진행, 불안한 조성 등 다양한 기법을 사용함으로써 로버트 브라우닝의 시를 더욱 극적으로 표현하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 이 두 작품은 공통적으로 작품 속 각각의 곡들이 연결되지 않고 표제적·음악적으로 독립성을 띠고 있다는 것도 발견할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 <여섯 개의 가곡(Sechs Lieder, Op. 13)>과 <세 개의 브라우닝 노래(Three Browning Songs Op. 44)>의 음악적인 분석뿐만 아니라, 이와 더불어 두 작품의 특징 비교를 바탕으로 하여 연주자로서의 지향점도 생각해본다. 또한 단순히 이 작품들에 대한 연구를 하는 것에서 그치지 않고 앞으로 이 두 작곡가의 다른 작품들과, 그리고 더 나아가 다른 여류 작곡가들과 그들의 작품에 대한 관심을 고취시키는 데에 본 논문의 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

This is a study on <Sechs Lieder, Op. 13> by composer Clara Wieck Schumann (1819–1886) and <Three Browning songs, Op. 44> by composer Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867–1944). Clara Schumann is one of the most successful female pianist and composer in Europe, and also Amy Beach is a famous female composer who left her name as a prominent musician in American music history. Nevertheless, there are not many studies on female musicians including Clara Schumann and Amy Beach compared to male musicians who have numerous previous studies of them and their works. Therefore, we research the history of female composers in the Western music and then <Sechs Lieder, Op. 13> by Clara Schumann and <Three Browning Songs, Op. 44> by Amy Beach, which are the representative art songs of them will be analyzed in this study, including the background of the work. Through this study, it can be seen that Clara Schumanns <Sechs Lieder, Op. 13>, which was dedicated to the Queen of Denmark, has concise and clear characteristics in form, technique, and accompaniment form. In contrast, in <Three Browning Songs, Op. 44> by American composer Amy Beach, it can be seen that the composer used various techniques such as frequent beats and tempo changes, chromatic melodic progression, and disturbing tones to express Robert Browning's poetry more dramatically. In addition, it can be found the two works also have a common feature that the individual songs in the works are not connected in terms of lyrics and music. Finally, the direction of performance as a performer is considered based on comparison of characteristics of the two works as well as the musical analysis of <Sechs Lieder, Op. 13> and <Three Browning Songs Op. 44> in this study. In addition, it can be said that this study has meaningful purpose to inspire interest in not only the other works of these two composers, but also other female composers and their works.
