피리 독주곡 <Chants of Rain> 분석 연구

Abstract

The study analyzed Thomas Osborne's piri solo <Chants of Rain>, commissioned and premiered in 2013, and the results were as follows:

First, <Chants of Rain> was Thomas Osborne's first piri solo, based on the medieval church chant, Rorate Caeli. Using the unique tone and technique of the piri, it was intended to create the feeling of chant.

Second, the song consists of a total of 13 periodes, intro and A～L, with a total of 252 bars. There are no key signatures on all parts, and the appearance notes allows to infer modes by periode. The entire song is composed of Dorian and Aeolian modes, which are influenced by the original song.

Third, it has the characteristics of repeating and transforming a particular melody within each large periode. Similar melody lines appear in paragraphs A and B, and paragraphs J and K. Especially at the beginning and the end of the song, the melody of the chant is emphasized. Major melody types consist of e♭-f introduction melody(㉠melody type), g-e♭-d♭melody(㉡melody type), B♭-f-a♭f-a♭melody(㉢melody type) and b♭-f'-a'♭melody(㉣melody type). Among them, ㉠melody type is also a major melody in the original chants.

Fourth, the rhythm also features similar patterns repeated within the large periodes. Similar rhythms appear when similar melodies are repeated within a periode. And during repetition, variations occur in which the rhythms are magnified or reduced or split into short rhythms. Frequent rhythms include hemiola, three-divided rhythm pattern, and a syncopation.

Fifth, dynamics and vibrato(nong-eum) appear in conjunction with melody line, emphasizing the feeling of music coming from melody line. It also uses tremolos, portamentos, and bi-cheong to reveal the piri's tone and special technique. The theatrical device presented by the composer expresses the diminuendo, where the music moves away from the eyes and ears at the same time.

Thus, <Chants of Rain> incorporates two different cultures into the work by being based on Gregorian chants in mode and melody, and utilizing their own piri in tone and playing techniques. Through this study, I hope those who want to play "Chants of Rain" can understand more deeply, and that the fusion of various cultures will create more new piri solos.

본 연구는 2013년에 위촉 및 초연된 토마스 오스본의 피리 독주곡<Chants of Rain>을 분석하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, <Chants of Rain>은 토마스 오스본의 첫 번째 피리 독주곡으로 중세 교회 성가인 Rorate Caeli를 기반으로 작곡되었다. 피리 고유의 음색과 연주기법을 활용하여 성가의 느낌을 살리고자 하였다.

둘째, 본 곡은 총 252마디로 Intro와 A～L의 총 13단락으로 이루어져 있다. 모든 부분에 조표 표시가 없으며 출현음을 통하여 단락별 선법을 유추할 수 있다. 곡 전체가 도리아와 에올리아 선법으로 이루어져 있는데 이는 원곡의 영향을 받은 것이다.

셋째, 각 대단락 내에서 특정 선율을 변형시키며 반복하는 특징이 있다. A단락과 B단락, J단락과 K단락에서는 서로 비슷한 선율 진행이 나타나고, 곡의 앞부분과 뒷부분에서 특히 성가의 선율을 살리고 있다. 주요 선율형은 e♭-f도입선율(㉠선율형), g-e♭- d♭선율(㉡선율형), B♭-f-a♭-f-a♭선율(㉢선율형), b♭-f'-a'♭선율(㉣선율형)의 4가지로 나타나며, 이 중 ㉠선율형은 원곡 성가에도 주요하게 나타나는 선율이다.

넷째, 리듬 또한 대단락 내에서 비슷한 패턴이 반복되는 특징이 나타나난다. 단락 내에서 유사 선율이 반복될 때 유사 리듬이 나타나며, 반복시에는 리듬이 확대 또는 축소되거나 잔 리듬으로 분할되는 변형이 일어난다. 자주 나타나는 리듬은 헤미올라, 3분할 리듬꼴, 당김음이 있다.

다섯째, 셈여림과 농음은 선율 진행과 연계되어 나타나며 선율 진행에서 오는 음악의 느낌을 강조해준다. 또한 트레몰로, 포르타멘토, 비청의 사용으로 피리의 음색과 특수주법을 드러낸다. 작곡가가 제시한 연극적 장치는 음악이 눈과 귀에서 동시에 멀어지는 디미누엔도를 표현한다.

이와 같이 <Chants of Rain>은 선법과 선율은 그레고리안 성가에 기반하고, 음색과 연주 기법은 피리 고유의 것을 활용하며 서로 다른 두 문화를 작품에 녹여내고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 <Chants of Rain>을 연주하고자 하는 이들이 곡을 더 깊이 이해하고 연주할 수 있기를 바라며, 다양한 문화의 융합으로 새로운 피리 독주곡이 더욱 많이 생겨나기를 기대해본다.
