Abstract

This paper illustrates the study of the process of interpreting and understanding the subconscious terrain which is visualized in my work through reverie. A reverie is a psychological activity initiated not by reason and logic, but a natural flow of imagination. Therefore, the work that was created by following a stream of imagination needs to be backtracked for analysis and interpretation. The process is crucial in achieving a precise understanding of my work that otherwise would seem ambiguous and complex.

I recalled memories that became the inspiration for my projects and traced back the process of drifting into a reverie. The special practice of meditation allowed me to transcend reality and reach the realm of reverie. Such routine was a ritual of distancing myself from an unstable and insecure state of emotions, pulling myself out of the whirlwind of anxiety. When I have successfully reached a calm state of mind, I naturally fall into the realm of reverie which sits between the conscious and the subconscious. This state, which is similar to Bachelards notion of the consciousness of dreams, is when scenes of the subconscious start to surface.

The images and sculptures produced in the subconscious do not mimic reality; rather, they are rendered to resemble the oneiric reality I experience as irrational and dubious. Reverie exists in the ambiguous midpoint between conscious and the subconscious, but behind it there is immense will or purpose that becomes its driving force. This purpose is the attitude as an artist to not pursue perfection, reflecting the conscious will of distancing oneself from ideal social standards.

The pursuit of imperfection is presented through the visual elements of my work. The vulnerability of my work is a reflection of myself that is far from special. Through this pursuit Ive tried to relate and listen to others and have affirmed that all individuals exist on the basis of interdependent relationships. Thus, the work goes through the process of sympathizing with imperfect and vulnerable materials and heads toward the distant dream of becoming a more affable person.

The works depicting the subconscious world encouraged a better understanding of my true self. Through the practice I tried to see my socially oppressed self from an objective point of view, pinpointing my position in society. Understanding others and society with a coherent understanding of oneself allows a wider tolerance of mistakes and flaws. I plan on continuing the projects that explore my inner self, in pursuit of a composition of imperfect fragments rather than a single complete subject.
