영화적 도시와 미디어-공간 경험

Abstract

본 논문은 독일의 문화비평가이자 영화이론가 지그프리트 크라카우어(Siegfried Kracauer, 1889-1966)의 도시 문화 연구와 영화론을 미디어-공간 경험 이론으로 재구성하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그동안 크라카우어의 저작은 주로 영화 연구에서 논의가 이루어진 반면, 초기의 도시 문화론은 상대적으로 주목을 받지 못했다. 이에 본 논문은 두 주제를 그의 전체 저작의 맥락에서 통합적으로 접근해 분석한다. 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 크라카우어의 도시 문화 분석은 영화의 매체적 특수성과 친화성 논의와 연결되는 미디어-공간적 접근임을 규명한다. 둘째, 표층적 표현으로서의 시각적 매체인 영화가 도시 이미지와 도시 경험을 구성하는 과정을 탐구한다. 셋째, 영화 관객 경험에 대한 크라카우어의 논의에서 영화관이 도시적 경험과 영화적 경험이 교차되는 미디어 공간으로 기능함을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 크라카우어의 미디어-공간 경험 이론이 영화의 존재론을 비판적으로 조망하고 있으며, 미디어와 공간의 상호작용이 어떻게 도시적 경험을 구성하는지를 보여주고 있음을 주장한다. 본 논문은 크라카우어의 영화와 도시론을 미디어 문화 연구와 도시 연구, 영화 연구의 맥락에서 체계적으로 확장하고, 미디어-공간 경험으로 재해석된 그의 주요 저술이 현대 문화 연구 발전을 위한 중요한 이론적 자원임을 확인한다는 의의를 갖는다.

This dissertation is primarily concerned with a critical analysis of the work of Siegfried Kracauer(1889-1966), a Jewish-German cultural critic and film theorist, with particular reference to the experience of media-space. While Kracauers writings have been mainly discussed in the fields of film studies, his earlier studies on the city and urban culture have received a good deal less attention. This dissertation synthetically approaches and analyzes the themes of film and city in the context of his major works. First, the dissertation shows that Kracauers analysis of the city is developed along with his account of films specificity as a medium and its inherent affinities. Second, the dissertation explores the process of how film as a surface-level expression serves to construct not only the image of the city but also the cinematic experience of the city. Third, focusing on Kracauers analysis of the cinematic experience, the dissertation examines how cinema plays a role as a media space in articulating the combination of urban and cinematic experiences. In doing so, the dissertation argues that Kracauers theory of the experience of media-space critically revisits the ontology of film as a media text and as a socio-cultural phenomenon and discusses how the interaction between media and space constitutes the urban experience. This dissertation contributes to a critical reception of Kracauers theory of film and city in the fields of media and cultural studies and shows that his works on the experience of media-space provide key theoretical motives for the development of the critical study of media-space today.
