Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the permitted materials for each status
through the records of regulations related to carts and harnesses of the Unified Silla
period. In this regard, King Hungduk's prohibition can examine through Geogi(車騎)
articles of the Samguk-sagi(三國史記).
First, the highest status used Tongheon Uger, which has a cover on the front and rear
of the upper part of the cart. In addition, both men and women rode horses as a
general means of transportation.
Second, carts and harnesses differentiated materials for each status according to the
prohibition. There are ten carts items and eight harnesses items regarding the ban.
Materials used in each item can classify into five categories: wood, jewel, metal, fabric,
and leather.
Third, prohibitions purpose was to establish royal authority by clarifying the
difference between the royal family and Jingol.
Fourth, the items exposed on the outside applied stricter differences compared to
invisible items.
Fifth, it was intended to strictly apply the status system through the difference
between Jingol and Yukdupum.
Sixth, the trend of luxury was prevalent in prohibited items of all status in men and
women. In particular, women showed a greater tendency to consume luxury than men,
and in the same status, a more relaxed ban applied to women than men.
Behind King Hungduks prohibition, some elements reveal a complex social situation.
This analysis helps to grasp the trajectory of changes in material culture. Moreover, it
can also contribute to the recognition of the overall Silla era.
