독서모임 구성원의 참여에 대한 질적 사례연구

Abstract

When I arrived at Seoul, I was impressed by Korean youths attending reading club meetings regularly. I was curious to know what made them enthusiastic about such meetings. While getting to know more about the fad, I happened to find out that there were only a few studies conducted on them. Moreover, even the smaller number of existing studies reflect educational points of view. Today people have varied ways of spending their time ever before. People prefer playing their mobile phones to reading books. Considering significant benefits that studying reading clubs would bring us academically and socially. I decided to begin this study. The objective of this study is to find out how such book clubs are functioning, which has sparked almost no interest among the education sectors. This study goes deeper down to the core aspect of the reading club as well as its surface appearance. The main focus is on participants in the meetings. Based on years of research, this study is to shed a new light on the educational benefit of book meetings. To have a close look at deep structure of the book club, I did a qualitative case study. I chose out a book club called Free Books which is composed of its members with dedication, depth, and fun. The participation is voluntary. To reach its goal, I posed three questions as follows: First, what does Free Books club look like? Second, what characteristics does Free Books club have? Third, what is the educational and anthropological meaning of Free Books club? Throughout the study, I met five members of the club who seemed to have impacted the formation and the characteristics of the book club. For collecting materials, I did participation, field research, and interviews which are commonly used in qualitative studies. I have three outcomes from this study. First, what does Free Books club look like? Captain Ham started this book club with three other members, believing book club meeting was worthwhile. To recruit members, he used an Android app, called Small Gathering. The club needs its members assistance in reserving venues, selecting books, dealing with agenda, and holding meetings. Active participants became board members. A typical meeting usually ends with afterward hangouts. To understand how the club operates, I divide into six categories: participants, managerial members, mini meetings, books discussion, afterward hangouts, and regulations. To pursue its original goal, the club prioritized participants and books discussion. Therefore, I tried to look into those two aspects deeply. To understand the club members participation, I delve into the kinds, characteristics, and attitudes, of participants. I found four distinctions of it. Captain Ham wants to be a wise man rather than to be successful in money-making. Soon-Young and Ji-Soo are thinkers. They are introspective. You-Kyung is interested in societal problems and thus wishes to find solutions to them. She deserves the title of an active responder to societal problems. Kai is an eager learner, willing to learn anything from sharing emotions and feelings through interactions. Free Books club does not influence its members when anyone wants to join or leave the club. However, it requires all members to read an assigned book and to show mutual respect by using polite expressions, not swear words. Although widely open to anyone who wants to join, it did not seem that every member enjoyed the degree of openness when it comes to book discussions. Ham, You-Kyung, Soon-young and Dong-gue-rami were regular members. However, Kai did not attend all the club meetings. He poorly participated in the meetings due to lack of frankness. He did not like to hear cliches and bromides. He could not stand people telling beautiful stories. In addition, he claimed that he gained little or nothing from book selection processes and communications. This analysis provides me with an opportunity to study the book club from an educational viewpoint. All members are trying to become better persons and to make a better society. They learn and develop themselves by having conversations about books, people, and themselves. When compared with school education, book club meetings follow a different path although the two share the same goal. Members of book clubs are more active than students at school. In book clubs, no one pushes them to work harder, to check their progress. When member have questions, they must find their solutions and answers on their own. On the other hand, they can get access to many different viewpoints, although there are occasions where they cannot express their thoughts as freely as they can for some reasons. Some are reluctant to put out their thought, and others are worried that they might hurt others feelings. Besides, personalities, sexes, tactfulness, cultures in which they grow play distinctive roles in restricting a free flow of thoughts. The entire process of this research is a pilgrimage to wisdom. Through conducting this research, I can get some understanding of qualitative case study based on Anthropology of education and nature of book club meetings. I must confess the lack of my study due to the given extent and scope of this research. However, I hope to gain a newer understanding about book clubs through further follow-ups in the field.

한국에 처음 왔을 때 한국 젊은이들이 독서모임에 자주 참여하는 모습은 나에게 깊은 인상을 주었다. 한국 젊은이들이 왜 독서모임에 대해 열정적인지 궁금하였다. 한편 한국에 독서모임은 많지만 독서모임에 대한 연구는 그 수가 적다. 독서모임에 대한 연구 중에서 교육의 눈으로 독서모임을 연구하는 것은 더욱 찾기 힘들다. 지금 이 시대에 시간을 어떻게 보낼지에 대한 사람들의 선택지가 넓다. 책을 읽는 것보다 휴대폰에 더 쉽게 빠진다. 한국에서 인기가 많은 독서모임에 대한 연구가 사회적으로 그리고 학문적으로도 의미가 있다고 생각하여 본 연구를 시작하였다. 이 연구의 목적은 교육학 연구에서 그 동안 주목받지 못했던 독서모임에 대하여 알아보는 것이다. 표면적인 모습뿐만 아니라 독서모임의 심층적인 특성도 살펴보는 것이다. 본 연구는 독서모임 구성원들의 참여에 중점을 두었다. 이를 바탕으로 독서모임의 교육적인 의미를 재조명하는 것도 이 연구의 목표이다. 독서모임을 보다 깊게 들여다보기 위해서 나는 질적 사례연구방법을 선택하였다. 연구 현장으로 진지함, 깊이와 재미를 추구하는 자발적인 독서모임 프리책을 선정하였다. 연구목적을 이루기 위해서 다음과 같은 세 가지 질문을 설정하였다. 첫째, 프리책은 어떤 독서모임인가? 둘째, 프리책 구성원들의 참여 양상은 어떤 특성을 가지는가? 셋째, 독서모임의 교육인류학적 의미는 무엇인가? 연구참여자 선정은 프리책 독서모임의 정체성을 형성하는 데 많은 영향을 주고 특징이 서로 다른 5명의 구성원을 고려하였다. 자료수집은 나는 질적 연구에서 가장 많이 활용되는 참여관찰, 현지자료조사, 그리고 심층면담 방법을 사용하였다. 연구의 잠정적인 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 프리책이 어떤 독서모임인가에 대해 정리하였다. 모임장 햄은 독서모임이 의미가 있는 활동이라고 생각하여 다른 세 명의 초창기멤버들과 함께 프리책을 만들었다. 이후 구성원들을 모집하기 위해서 그는 휴대폰 앱을 통해서 프리책 독서모임을 개설하였다. 독서토론이 순조롭게 진행되기 위해서는 장소예약, 도서선정, 발제, 사회 등 여러 사항에 대한 구성원들의 지지와 도움이 필요하다. 이곳에서 활발하게 참여하는 구성원들이 운영진이 된다. 독서토론이 끝나면 구성원들은 뒷풀이를 하기도 한다. 이처럼 프리책이 어떻게 돌아가고 있는지에 대해 구성원, 운영진, 소모임, 독서토론, 뒷풀이, 규칙의 여섯 가지로 정리하였다. 특히 독서모임은 결국 사람들이 모여서 독서토론을 하는 활동이므로 구성원과 독서토론이 독서모임에서 큰 비중을 차지한다. 그래서 구성원과 독서토론과 관련하여 더 깊이 들여다보았다. 다음으로 나는 참여의 유형, 참여의 특성, 참여부진의 원인이라는 세 부분을 통해 프리책의 참여 양상을 알아보았다. 연구참여자들의 참여 유형은 크게 네 가지로 분류할 수 있다. 첫째는 햄과 같이 경제적인 성공보다 현자가 되고 싶어하는 현자지향형이다. 두 번째 유형은 순영과 지수처럼 다른 구성원들보다 성찰을 많이 하는 성찰지향형이다. 세 번째로는 유경과 같이 사회문제에 대해 관심이 많고 사회문제를 해결하고 싶은 욕구가 강한 사회문제책임형이 있다. 마지막 유형은 카이처럼 지식과 감정 또는 의견을 공유하며 모든 것을 공부하려는 공부지향형이다. 프리책은 구성원들의 참여나 탈퇴를 개개인에게 맡기는 자발적인 독서모임이다. 그러나 질이 높은 토론을 위해 책을 완독하거나 존댓말을 사용해야 한다는 강제성도 발휘된다. 또한 프리책 독서모임은 누구나 언제든지 가입할 수 있는 개방성을 지닌다. 그런데 토론과정에서 폐쇄적인 측면도 찾을 수 있었다. 연구참여자인 햄, 유경, 순영 그리고 지수는 독서모임에 활발하게 참여하는 반면, 카이는 프리책 독서모임에 자주 참여하지 않는다. 그가 참여에 부진한 이유는 사람들이 솔직한 이야기보다 뻔한 이야기와 아름다운 이야기들을 많이 하기 때문이다. 그리고 도서선정의 문제와 소통에서 얻을 수 있는 것이 없는 점도 그가 소극적으로 참여하는 원인이다. 이러한 기술과 분석을 바탕으로 나는 프리책 독서모임을 교육의 눈으로 해석하였다. 독서모임의 구성원들은 더 나은 사람과 더 나은 사회를 지향하고 있었다. 그리고 책과의 대화, 사람과의 대화, 자기와의 대화를 통해서 지식을 나누고 학습하고 있었다. 독서모임과 학교교육의 학습과정을 비교해 보면, 모르는 상태에서 아는 상태로 변화하는 방향은 같지만 세부적인 흐름은 같지 않다. 학교교육에 비해서 독서모임의 구성원들은 학습에 더 능동적이다. 공부를 시키는 사람이 없고 학습했는지를 감독하거나 독촉하는 사람도 없다. 궁금한 것이 있으면 그에 대한 답을 스스로 생각하고 스스로 찾는다. 그리고 다양한 사람들에서 다양한 시각을 얻을 수 있다. 그러나 독서토론 과정에서 사람들이 여러 원인으로 자신의 생각을 솔직하게 말하지 못하는 한계도 있다. 이미지 관리를 위해서 진실한 생각을 숨기는 사람도 있지만 상대방이 상처를 받을까봐 걱정해서 솔직할 수 없는 사람도 있다. 그리고 성격, 성별, 관계, 말재주, 문화 등 여러 요소들이 여기에 작용하고 있다. 연구의 과정은 나에게도 학습의 과정이라 할 수 있다. 연구를 통해서 나는 교육인류학과 질적 연구, 그리고 독서모임에 대해 새로운 이해를 얻을 수 있었다. 그러나 본 논문에서 연구의 범위와 한계로 인해서 자세히 다루지 못한 부분도 있다. 후속 연구를 통해서 더 새로운 이해를 얻을 수 있기를 바란다.
