Abstract
With the spread of consumption culture, the scale of consumption has increased significantly. Instead of convenience and comfort in life, ecologically negative effects such as resource depletion and environmental destruction have also increased. Accordingly, along with the reflection on the existing unsustainable life, the need to seek alternative lifestyles has also increased and Minimal Life has been receiving more public attention in recent years. In the modern society where consumerism has become the mainstream, it can be a meaningful attempt for understanding learners in environmental education that to observe the practices of those who reduce their possessions and consumption as it is and to explore how they change their lives by continuously attempting voluntary practices. In this regard, the need for research is raised.
This study attempted to find environmental educational implications by exploring the experiences of those practicing minimalism in their daily lives and discussing the process and life transition from the perspective of learning. For this, a qualitative research method was selected, and in-depth interviews were conducted by intentionally sampling five participants according to the criteria set by the researcher, and data were also collected through related online activity observation and literature data.
The result shows that their practice of minimalism were triggered by daily experiences of being aware of the dangers in daily life or recognizing the inherent emotional dissatisfaction. They practiced emptying clutters and renewed their perspective on possession, and this experience enabled reflection on life as a whole, resulting in a transition to a different way of life than before.
In this study, the transformation of their lives was examined by dividing them into three main areas: consumption, environment, and personal life. With the practice of minimalism, they became free from consumeristic life and pursued an eco-friendly lifestyle. To this end, it was confirmed that learning was attempted through voluntary learning, writing, and social interaction, and that external growth such as job and career setting, as well as growth in self-realization.
As a result, through the practice of minimalism, the participants experienced transformative and informal learning beyond simple experiences by reflecting on the overall life. Through their experiences, it was possible to obtain educational implications that environmental education should be based on the lives of learners and that it should be and education with personal meaning for learners, providing opportunities for growth. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to positive emotional experiences through environmental education and the possibility of extension as informal learning. Along with this, their life experience of practicing minimalism provides social implications in that it can be a specific example of good life in a sustainable society.
