석의(釋擬)적 재현에 관한 작업 연구

Abstract

This study presents the notion of paraphrased representation, an expanded perspective of representation in art today. Furthermore, it explains the process through which that point of view was developed from the researchers own artistic experience, art history and case studies in philosophy.

This papers first objective was to review the multiple layers of meaning of an original image, which is defined as an object of representation, while reconstructing a mass media image and a universal image formed through the researchers own experiences using everyday objects. In this process, it came to light that the notion of representation in art remained anchored in formal imitation and techniques based on visual realism. Nonetheless, the main driver of representational art today goes beyond admiration for realistic imitation, and artists involve themselves in the process of actively interpreting the object, creatively reconstructing and directing it. Through his own artistic process, this researcher evidenced the phenomenon that todays representational work specific impressionisation of a universal image, causing the viewer to develop an attitude of alief. The researcher also understands that the artists direction, which injects a reflection on experience and imagination into the artwork, is the main foundation of creating the alief.

The researcher proposes paraphrased representation, wherein the meaning of representation is expanded from the conventional notion of representational art. Paraphrased representation is a new idea that reinterprets the meaning of imitation and the existing concept of the original image by specific impressionisation based on the artists own experience and material image. In this way, the cognitive transformation of the object makes it possible to expand the meaning of representation in art, previously regarded as a visual imitation of the original image directed by the artist to present a concrete narrative. The researcher examines the concept of paraphrased representation through an investigation into art history and philosophical considerations, and by reflecting on his own artistic experience of the change in the meaning of representation.

On that basis, the researcher came to realize that a reflection on the object of representation can arise from a process of paraphrased representation that induces experience and imagination through specific impressionisation, this is also considered as another possibility of representational art today. In this way, by inferring a correlation between this researchers work and the trajectory of change in the meaning of representation in art, this study aims to reveal that the expansion of the meaning of representation in contemporary art can be explored through the lens of paraphrased representation.

본 연구는 오늘날 미술 속 재현에 대한 석의(釋擬)라는 확장된 관점을 제시하며, 그 관점이 전개되어온 과정을 본 연구자의 작업 경험과 미술사 및 철학적 사례를 교차하여 서술하고자 한다.

본 연구자는 대중매체 이미지와 본인의 경험을 통해 형성된 보편적 이미지를 일상사물을 이용하여 재구성하면서, 재현대상이라 여겨온 원상(原象)의 의미를 다층적으로 고찰해왔다. 이러한 과정에서 미술 속 재현에 대한 통념이 시각적 사실성에 의한 조형적 모방과 기술에 머물러 있음을 경험하였다. 하지만 오늘날 재현적 미술의 주요한 면모는 사실적 모사에 대한 감탄을 넘어, 작가가 대상을 능동적으로 해석하고 이를 창의적으로 재구성 및 연출하는 과정에 있다고 생각하였다. 본 연구자는 일련의 작업과정을 통해, 오늘날 재현적 작업이 보편적 이미지를 특정인상화하여 감상자로 하여금 가假믿음(alief)을 유도하는 현상을 발견하게 되었다. 그리고 경험과 상상을 작업에 투영하도록 유도하는 작가의 연출이 가假믿음(alief)을 발현시키는 주요한 특성임을 파악하게 되었다.

본인은 이와 같은 기존 재현미술에 대한 통념으로부터 확장된 재현의 의미인 석의(釋擬)를 제안한다. 석의는 모방(擬)의 의미를 다시 해석(釋)한다는 새로운 용어로, 기존의 원상(原象) 개념을 작가의 경험과 물질적 이미지에 의해 특정인상화하여 재해석한 것이다. 이와 같이 재현대상에 대한 인식적 전환은 원상에 대한 시각적 모사로 간주되었던 미술 속 재현의 의미를 구체적이고 서술적 상황으로 제시된 작가의 연출로 확장 가능하게 한다. 본 연구자는 이러한 재현의 의미변화를 본인의 작업경험을 반영하여 미술사와 철학적 고찰을 통시적으로 조망하는 것을 통해 석의(釋擬) 개념을 살펴보았다.

한편으로 특정인상화를 통해 경험과 상상을 유도하는 석의(釋擬)적 재현 과정으로부터 재현대상에 대한 일종의 성찰이 생겨날 수 있음을 깨닫게 되었는데, 이 또한 오늘날 재현적 미술의 또 다른 가능성이라 여긴다. 이렇듯 본 연구자의 작업과 미술 속 재현의 의미 변화 궤적의 상관성을 유추하면서, 동시대 미술 속 재현의 의미 확장이 석의(釋擬)적 재현 작업을 통해 모색될 수 있음을 본 연구를 통해 밝히고자 한다.
