소실되는 조각을 통한 몸의 시간성 연구

Abstract

일상에서 사람의 몸을 보면 하나의 단일 대상으로 보인다. 그러나 하나의 단일 대상으로 보이는 지금 그 한 사람 몸속에는 시, 분, 초 단위로 끝없이 미분된 시간들의 몸들이 누적되어 있다. 시간을 미세하게 나누어서 보면 사람의 몸은 각각의 시간마다 미세하게 다른 몸들을 지니고 있다. 이러한 미세한 몸들이 누적되어 지금 현재 이 순간에 우리가 보고 있는 몸의 모습을 드러낸다. 이는 켜켜이 쌓인 나이테가 나무 기둥처럼 보이는 것과 같다. 나무 기둥은, 그 속에 수없이 많은 보이지 않는 시간의 나이테를 품고 있다. 사람의 몸도 겉으로 드러나지 않는 무수히 많은 과거의 몸들을 현재의 몸 안에 켜켜이 품고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 점차 와해되고 소실되는 조각을 통해 우리의 몸에 누적되어 있는 과거의 몸들을 펼쳐 보이는 데 있다. 이를 위해, 얼음, 드라이아이스, 연기 같은 물질을 사용하여 조각을 제작하고, 이것이 완전히 소실되는 과정을 드러낸다. 또한, 종이를 누적시켜 형상을 만들고 이를 태워서, 현재 조각의 표면 속에 숨겨져 있던 과거의 표면을 노출시킨다. 이처럼 조각이 소실되는 작업과정을 통하여, 몸의 시간성을 드러내는 나의 작업은 과거의 몸들이 끊임없이 현재의 몸과 만났다 헤어지는 사건 속에 있음을 전달하려는 것이다. 이러한 사건성을 개별 몸에 국한시키지 않고 확장하여 보면, 우리의 몸이 각기 다른 과거를 누적하고 있는 타자의 몸과 스치듯 잠시 만났다가, 헤어지고, 또다시 만나게 되는 무수한 상황이 계속해서 이어진다. 이 같은 몸의 확장을 통하여, 고유한 시간성을 품은 사람들이 스쳐 지나는 일상이 전시 공간에서 관객들이 조각들과 만나는 사건의 총체와 다름없음을 환기시키고자 한다.

A human body in everyday life seems to be a single object. Inside the very body seen as a single form, however, there shall be accumulated bodies of time infinitely differentiated into hours, minutes, and seconds. With its time finely divided, a human body retains slightly different bodies for each differentiated moment. These fragmented bodies in time, being accumulated one above the other, thus present the appearance of the body we are looking at this very moment. A human body bears countlessly different bodies of times ― similar to a set of tree rings having the appearance of a tree trunk, which is holding innumerable and invisible times inside. This study is oriented to express the accumulated bodies by working with bodies of human sculptures, and to reveal the times of our bodies in the vanishing processes. To this end, my work employs materials capable of completely breaking down ― water ice, dry ice, and smoke ― which display the gradual process of vanishing and disappearing. In addition to that, I burn human sculptures formed by accumulating layers of paper, to uncover the hidden surfaces of the figures. With this method, my works intend to say the fact that every individual body of our own is a collection of times, as well as that the bodies of the past continue to meet with and part from the body of the present. Furthermore, extending to the bodies of others, there shall be countlessly continual occurrences in which each body with its own times comes across and passes by. Thus, placing the bodies of sculptures with time in spaces, I would evoke our reality as the totality of occurrences where people holding their own bodies of time are passing by.
