『오뒷세이아』의 아폴로고이

Abstract

Apologoi consists of various episodes replete with the elements of fairy tales and folklore. These unique features have led to the charge over two millennia that its heterogeneity and eclecticism undermines the Odysseys artistic unity. From the perspective that the Odyssey is a poetic response to the precedent monumental epic, the Iliad, however, the so-called un-Homeric characteristics of Apologoi can be seen as the Odyssean reinterpretation of the Iliads central themes and aesthetic principles. Through the wanderings of his own protagonist, the Odyssey–poet seeks a way to establish a new kind of heroism differentiated from that of the Iliad. At the same time, the Odyssey tries to discover what to sing in an epic appropriate to the new era after the Trojan War. Odysseus visit to Hades is pivotal in this respect: the Underworld journey provides the Odyssey-poet with an opportunity to confront his poetic heritage in its entirety. Encountering his comrades of the Trojan War and the legendary figures of the mythic past, Odysseus looks back on the cardinal themes of the Iliad: the immortal glory in return for the sacrifice of ones own life and the heroic identity which constantly oscillates between divinity and bestiality. While having his protagonist meet various characters of the mythic past including the Trojan War, the Odyssey-poet redefines the Iliads central themes as something bygone and irrevocable. In this light, it is noteworthy that the inhabitants of Apologoi revolve around one theme: transgression of the boundaries between gods, men and beasts. For the horror and disgust Odysseus experiences in facing them is equivalent to the Odysseys criticism of the poetics of precariousness, the overarching thematic-aesthetic principle of the Iliad. As Odysseus rebuilds himself as a new hero which the transformed world after the Trojan War demands and then reconstructs his Ithaca anew, so the Odyssey, by praising its new hero, declares itself a precursor of a new kind of epic which distinguishes itself from the Iliads immortal glory and super/subhuman heroes.

오뒷세우스의 모험담을 담고 있는 아폴로고이는 호메로스 서사시 전반을 지배하는 사실주의적 특성과 뚜렷하게 구별되는, 서사시보다는 동화나 민담에 어울리는 다채롭고 환상적인 이야기들로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 특징은 아폴로고이라는 이질적인 이야기들의 무질서하고 두서없는 덩어리가 작품 전체의 중심부에 삽입됨으로써 『오뒷세이아』 전체의 구조적 짜임새를 무너뜨릴 뿐만 아니라 호메로스 서사시 특유의 비장미를 빛바래게 만든다는 비판으로 이어졌다. 하지만 『오뒷세이아』가 『일리아스』에 대한 시적 응답(poetic response)이라는 관점에서 바라볼 때, 과거와 현재 그리고 다양한 시점과 공간적 배경을 오가는 아폴로고이의 복잡한 구성과 다채로운 에피소드들은 『일리아스』에 대한 재해석이라는 맥락 속에서 그 의의가 새롭게 조명된다. 『오뒷세이아』의 시인은 아폴로고이를 통해 트로이아 전쟁이 막을 내린 변화한 세계에 어울리는 새로운 영웅상을 모색하는 동시에 새로운 서사시가 무엇을 노래해야 하는지를 탐색한다. 저승여행을 통해 『오뒷세이아』는 자신 앞에 놓인 시문학적 유산, 그리고 그 원천인 신화적 과거와 대면한다. 트로이아 전쟁의 전우들과 신화 속 과거의 인물들과의 만남을 통해 『오뒷세이아』의 시인은 초인적인 업적이 부여하는 불멸의 명성과 신-인간-짐승의 경계를 넘나드는 영웅상이라는 중요한 주제들을 이미 그 수명을 다한, 더 이상 재현될 수 없는 과거의 것으로 규정한다. 이러한 맥락에서 저승여행 앞뒤로 오뒷세우스가 맞닥뜨리는 아폴로고이 세계 속 거주민들이 모두 신과 인간, 인간과 짐승 사이 경계에 놓이거나 그 경계의 위반을 야기하는 존재들이라는 사실은 주목할 만하다. 이들이 주인공 오뒷세우스에게 불러일으키는 공포와 혐오의 감정은 『일리아스』를 관통하는 위태로움의 시학에 대한 『오뒷세이아』 시인의 비판적 재해석을 반영하는 것으로 이해할 수 있기 때문이다. 낯선 세계에서의 모험을 통해 오뒷세우스가 트로이아의 정복자로서의 정체성으로부터 벗어나 변화한 시대에 어울리는 영웅으로서 새로운 이타카를 건국하듯이, 그를 주인공으로 하는 서사시 『오뒷세이아』는 자신 앞에 놓인 기념비적 서사시 『일리아스』가 노래하는 불멸의 명성과 초월적인 영웅이 아닌 변화한 시대의 새로운 영웅을 노래함으로써 질적으로 차별화된 새로운 서사시의 시대가 열렸음을 선언하고자 한다.
