이자이 무반주 바이올린 소나타 제1번의 분석과 연주 방향 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 벨기에 태생의 바이올리니스트 겸 지휘자, 작곡가인 외젠 이자이(Eugène Auguste Ysaÿe, 1858–1931)의《6개의 무반주 바이올린 소나타, Op. 27》 중 1번에 관한 분석 연구이다. 필자는 이 곡을 2021년 봄 학기 서울대학교 음악대학원 석사과정 졸업연주회 중 한 곡으로 연주했는데, 본 연구에서 이 곡을 더 심층적으로 분석하여 연주자들이 이자이의 작곡 의도에 부합하는 연주를 할 수 있도록 세부적인 연주 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 이자이는 화려하고 강렬한 소리를 가진 바이올리니스트로서 유럽과 미국에서 이름을 떨쳤지만, 작곡가로서는 크게 성공하지 못하였다. 생애 동안 요한 제바스티안 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685-1750)의 곡에 큰 애착을 두고 있었던 이자이는 1923년 바이올리니스트 요제프 시게티(Joseph Szigeti, 1892–1973)의 바흐 무반주 바이올린 소나타 연주를 듣고 큰 감명을 받으며 바흐의 무반주 바이올린 곡의 계보를 이을 무반주 소나타를 작곡하기로 하고 단 하루 만에 소나타 6개의 스케치를 완성했다. 각 소나타는 시게티를 포함한 6명의 당대 바이올린 거장들에게 헌정되었고, 헌정한 바이올리니스트의 연주 스타일을 각 곡에 적용하여 곡마다 다른 주법이 사용된다. 시게티에게 헌정된《무반주 바이올린 소나타 1번》은 바흐의 무반주 소나타 1번과 같은 조성인 G단조로 되어있고, 악장 형식 또한 2악장에 푸가를 포함한 느림-빠름-느림-빠름의 바흐의 교회 소나타 형식을 사용하였다. 작품에 충실할 것을 강조한 시게티는 바흐 무반주 소나타를 연주할 때 음 대부분을 선명하게 연주하며, 주선율에 포르타멘토 주법을 빈번하게 사용한다. 또, 화음 연주 방식을 악장마다 차이를 두어 느린 악장에서는 화음을 꺾어 연주하여 주선율을 더욱 강조하는 한편 푸가 악장에서는 화음을 단번에 연주하여 모든 성부를 확실하게 들리게 한다. 이러한 시게티의 연주 스타일이《무반주 바이올린 소나타 1번》에 전반적으로 적용되어 연주 기호 또는 손가락 번호로 제시된다. 이자이의《무반주 바이올린 소나타 1번》은 그의 다른 무반주 바이올린 소나타보다 상대적으로 잘 연주되지 않는 곡이고 선행 연구 자료도 부족하다. 본 연구에서는 이 곡의 이론적 분석과 더불어 이 곡의 탄생에 크게 이바지한 바흐의 무반주 바이올린 소나타와 시게티의 바흐 연주 스타일과 비교하여 곡의 이해를 돕고 곡에 충실한 연주 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

This thesis presents an analytical research on 《Sonata for Solo Violin Op. 27 No. 1 in G Minor》 by Eugène Auguste Ysaÿe(1858–1931), a Belgian violinist, conductor, and composer. The author of thesis performed this piece at master's degree recital at the Seoul University Department of Music in the spring semester of 2021. By conducting a more profound analysis of the piece, the author set out to propose more detailed interpretation for other performers to play it in accordance with the composer's intention. Ysaÿe rose to distinction in Europe and the United States as a violinist that made splendid and intense sound but he never made it big as a composer. Keeping his huge attachment to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach(1685-1750) throughout his life, he was deeply touched by Bach's Sonatas for Solo Violin played by the violinist Joseph Szigeti(1892–1973) in 1923 and decided to write a sonata for solo violin to continue the tradition of Bach's sonatas for solo violin. It took him only one day to complete the sketch of six sonatas. Each of the sonatas was dedicated to six virtuosos of his time including Szigeti. The play styles of these violinists were applied to their dedicated pieces, which were played in different play techniques. Ysaÿe's 《Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1》 dedicated to Szigeti is in G Minor, same as Bach's 《Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1》. It consists of four movements in Bach's sonata de chiesa form of slow-fast-slow-fast with a fugue movement. Putting an emphasis on being true to the piece, Szigeti played most of the notes clearly and used the portamento technique for the main melodies when playing Bach's 《Sonatas for Solo Violin》. Adopting different chord play styles for different movements, he emphasized the main melodies by broken chords in a slow movement and played all the chords at once in a fugue movement to make sure that every part was heard clearly. In general, His play styles were applied to Ysaÿe's 《Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1》, being presented in musical symbols or finger numbers. Ysaÿe's 《Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1》 is not played as much as his other sonatas for solo violin, and there is a lack of previous research on it. The present study conducted a theoretical analysis of the piece and compared Bach's Sonatas for Solo Violin and Szigeti's play styles of Bach works both of which made a huge contribution to the composition of the piece, promoting its understanding and proposing play directions true to it.
