Abstract
This paper attempts to examine the implication of Hyangak(鄕樂) through the review of King Sejongs New Music, called Sinak(新樂) in the early Joseon Dynasty. The previous studies understood A-ak(雅樂) and Hyangak from a confrontational perspective, because they determined A-ak as Chinese ritual music and Hyangak as Korean traditional(indigenous) music. However, Hyangak, which appeared in the ancient system and the historical records, was the music made in the community ruled by the subordinate lord and it was interrelated to the universal culture of Sinocentrism, based on Confucianism in the East Asia.
The major reorganization process of the ritual music was carried out greatly during the reign of King Sejong in Joseon. As the exploration of the ancient system intensified, Park Yeon(朴堧, 1378∼1458) and King Sejong modified A-ak actively. But they experienced irony that the realization of A-ak was not right in reality, eventhough they proceeded with discretion according to the ancient system.
At this time, King Sejong paid attention to the ancient Hyangak, appeared in the ancient system. According to the record, the ancient Hyangak could make harmony with the Sinocentric A-ak when they played together and it was supposed to be played in the subordinated community as a local A-ak. King Sejong made a decision to compose new music, called Sinak and it implicated the model of the ancient local A-ak, Hyangak. Therefore, Sinak played extensively in various national rituals in Joseon right after it was made and King Sejong also gave an official name Gyunhwa(鈞和) to Sinak.
But the Sinak didnt played shortly after because of the death of King Sejong. After a long national funeral, the music began to be play since the reign of King Sejo. King Sejo made court musicians learn and play Sinak immediately for succession. Furthermore, one of the Sinak, 〈Jeongdaeup(定大業)〉and〈Botaepyeong(保太平)〉were chosen as Jongmyojeryeak(宗廟祭禮樂) and it was the first time to play Hyangak, Joseons local music in Jongmyo Shrine formally.
King Sejo modified some of 〈Jeongdaeup〉and〈Botaepyeong〉s musical characteristics. For example, the central notes of the music were changed to Cheonghwangjonggung(淸黃鐘宮) and the organization of the instruments were changed to place various instruments of A-ak, Dangak(唐樂), Hyangak in one place. It was a significant change to realize the ancient Hyangak to Joseons local A-ak in reality, that could cooperated with the Sinocentric Chinese A-ak.
