Dealing with Women Participation in Anti-Coup Movement in Myanmar

Abstract

수많은 미얀마 사람들이 군사쿠데타를 반대하기 위하여 시위활동에 참여하고 있다. 특히 그 사람 중에 남자들에 버금가는 여성의 투쟁 모습이 눈길을 끈다. 미얀마 여성은 오랜 세월 동안 반식민과 반전제독재의 투쟁을 해왔다. 이는 다른 측면에서 보자면 시위운동에 참여한 여성들이 독재통치하에서 많은 압박과 도전을 당했기 때문이다. 비록 여성들이 여러 방식으로 혁명에 참여해왔지만 그들에 대한 주목과 인식은 아직 부족하다. 기왕의 연구 성과에 따르면 시위에 참여한 여성들은 단지 비폭력 시위자나 남성 파업의 보조 지지자이다. 이것은 가부장체제의 시각과 영향을 받았기 때문이라고 볼 수 있다. 본문은 미얀마 여성주의자들이 참여한 과거와 현재의 혁명 활동에 주목하는 동시에 2021년 반군사쿠데타에 참여한 여성들의 동기와 행위의 의미를 밝혀보고자 한다. 이 연구는 두 가지 문제에 주목한다. 첫 번째, 여성들은 왜 시위활동에 참여하는가이다. 두 번째, 여성들은 어떻게 시위활동에 참여하고 있는가이다. 본 연구는 온라인 방법을 통해서 시위활동에 참여한 일부 여성들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였고, 수집해왔던 데이터를 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 묘사성과 연관성 분석을 적용한 정량적 연구방법을 채택하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 여성들은 군사쿠데타 반대 시위활동에 그들의 강한 욕구와 이익 수호를 위해서 참여한 것으로 나타난다. 여성 시위자들이 목소리를 높인 이유는 그들이 공동체생활에서 더 이상 전제 독재자 집권을 원하지 않기 때문이다. 이번 민주주의운동에서 모성으로서의 여성은 다음 세대의 미래에 대한 강렬한 책임감과 통찰력도 보여주었다. 특히 청년과 중년 여성들이 적극적으로 시위활동에 나온 것은 그들이 향후 의사결정과 정치참여 및 평화 프로세스에서 결정적 역할을 발휘할 수 있을 것으로 본다.

Thousands of people in Myanmar marched to protest to fail the military coup. Especially, a nearly equal number of women protesters participated alongside men. Myanmar women have been experienced a long history of opposition to colonialism, and to protest against dictatorship. On the other hand, women who have been involved in the protest might be facing several challenges under authoritarian rule. Although women engagement with diverse ways in the revolution were seen insightfully, less pay attention before. The previous study showed womens roles as nonviolence protesters and supportive roles to male strikers. The study emphasized feminists initiatives with various behaviors in the revolution in Myanmars past and current which gained more understanding on womens motivation and their protest behaviors in the 2021 military coup. This research focused on two questions: why and how women participate in the protest. Furthermore, the research designs conducted some related questionnaires and collect data with an online survey method, then distributed to women who have been participating in the protest movement. The study employed quantitative research designs with descriptive and correlational analysis. The finding showed that women in anti-coup protests are more likely to mobilize with their strong desire and interests. Women protesters raised their voices which they dont want any more dictatorship with their collective actions, motherhood also showed a strong perspective regarding the future for the next generation in the movement. Especially, young and middle-aged women have actively joined in the protest which tends to shape their future regarding decision making roles, participation in the political and peace process.
