방짜유기 기법을 활용한 금속공예 기물 제작 연구

Abstract

Bangjja Yugi, which was very prevalent enough to be used through the entire everyday life in the late Joseon Dynasty, has gradually lost its place due to the reasons, including the rapid influx of Western culture, and others, since the 1960s. In 1983, Bangjja Yugijang was designated as a national intangible cultural asset by being recognized for its excellence and value according to the Cultural Properties Protection Law. The workshops and master artisans have also made efforts to preserve traditional techniques and to modernize Bangjja Yugi. Among them, a representative example is the production of tableware - which utilizes mechanized apparatuses. In the early 2000s, along with its sterilizing effect, thanks to the luxurious image that it was used by the royal family in the past, Bangjja Yugi had a great vogue as a table ware. However, a reality is that objects, except for table wares, are still confined in the frame of traditional culture and do not fit into today's lifestyle. Accordingly, the researcher intended to produce various objects, used in modern life, by utilizing Bangjja Yugi as one of the ways to continue traditional crafts.

Copper-tin-based alloys are mainly used for casting because a higher tin content makes it more difficult to process; yet, when it is manufactured through the processes, such as hot forging, quenching, etc., along with a unique alloy ratio of copper 78% and tin 22%, it has special physical properties of high strength and excellent processability - which are unique to Bangjja Yugi. In addition, Bangjja Yugi expresses its excellent sterilization properties not only for various food poisoning bacteria, but also for the recently prevalent COVID-19 virus. Over the rough hammer marks that occur during the work process, the aesthetic characteristic its luxurious golden color shows is also the indispensable charm of Bangjja Yugi.

For Bangjja Yugi, the efficient working has been made traditionally via the division of labor and collaboration by several people from the melting work to make raw materials to the final object through the molding process. The modernized techniques and facilities have been improved and developed based on the original type of the traditional techniques, which have reduced the defect rate and improved productivity with the introduction of pneumatic hammers, hot rolling mills, and so on.

In the subsequent research on works, the improved techniques were used to produce the objects mainly used today. If we insist on the production utilizing the traditional handicraft techniques, the price will increase, which may make it difficult for the public to access it; if the work is in the same form and usage as it was in the past, it will also be ignored by the public. Therefore, by utilizing improved techniques and facilities, we manufactured daily necessities, for which the lifestyle and living space of modern people were considered, to make efforts to increase its popularity and to have Bangjja Yugi become an object that could be established in our daily life.

The purpose of this study lay in producing metal objects by utilizing the advantages of Bangjja Yugi. Even though some regrets might be left in that we focused on practicality, I think it would be an opportunity to glimpse the possibility of utilizing various Yugi products. In addition, only suggesting a direction for subsequent research as one of the processes for modernizing traditional crafts would be considered worthwhile. Furthermore, since it is a field of traditional crafts in which there are more cases that the techniques are acquired through long-time experience rather than systematic transmission training, this study is expected to be of great help to subsequent researchers interested in Yugi in the future. Through this, we hope that more diverse Yugi products will be produced by increasing the number of those who produce Yugi products, going further from the state that those who consume and enjoy Yugi products increase. Further, we also hope that Bangjja Yugi will become today's culture by going beyond the traditional culture to serve as an opportunity to enrich our culture.

조선 후기 일상생활 전반에서 쓸 만큼 성행했던 방짜유기는 1960년대 이후 서구 문화의 급격한 유입 등의 이유로 그 자리를 잃어갔다. 1983년, 방짜유기장은 문화재보호법에 따라 그 우수성과 가치를 인정받아 국가무형문화재로 지정되었다. 공방과 장인들 역시 전통 기법의 보전과 방짜유기의 현대화를 위해 노력했다. 그 중 대표적인 예로 기계화 설비를 활용한 식기 제작을 들 수 있다. 2000년 초, 방짜유기는 살균 효과와 더불어 과거 왕실에서 사용하던 고급스러운 이미지 덕분에, 식기로 큰 인기를 얻었다. 하지만 식기를 제외한 기물들은 여전히 전통문화라는 틀에 갇혀 오늘날의 생활양식에 어울리지 못하고 있는 현실이다. 이에 연구자는 전통공예를 이어가는 방안의 하나로 방짜유기를 활용해 현대생활에서 쓰는 다양한 기물들을 제작하고자 했다.

구리-주석계 합금은 주석의 함량이 높을수록 가공하기가 어려워 주조용으로 주로 사용되지만, 구리 78%와 주석 22%의 고유한 합금 비율과 열간 단조, 담금질 등의 과정을 거쳐 제작하면, 강도가 높고 가공성도 뛰어난 방짜유기만의 특수한 물리적 특성을 가진다. 또한 방짜유기는 각종 식중독균뿐 아니라, 최근 전 세계적으로 유행한 코로나19(COVID-19) 바이러스에도 우수한 살균 특성을 보인다. 작업공정에서 발생하는 거친 망치 자국 위로, 고급스러운 황금빛을 띠는 심미적 특성 역시 빼놓을 수 없는 방짜유기의 매력이다.

방짜유기는 전통적으로 원재료를 만드는 용해 작업에서부터 성형과정을 거쳐 최종 기물이 완성되기까지 여럿이 분업·협업을 통해 효율적으로 작업해왔다. 현대화된 기법과 설비는 전통 기법의 원형을 기반으로 개량·발전된 것으로, 공압식 해머, 열간압연기 등의 도입으로 불량률이 감소하고 생산성이 향상되었다.

이어진 작품연구에서는 개량된 기법을 활용해 오늘날 주로 쓰는 기물들을 제작했다. 전통 기법인 수공예 방식으로의 생산을 고집한다면, 가격이 높아져 대중들의 접근이 어려울 것이며, 작품이 과거에 쓰이던 형태와 쓰임 그대로라면 이 역시 대중들의 외면을 받을 것이다. 따라서 개량된 기법과 설비를 활용해 현대인의 생활양식과 주거 공간을 고려한 생활용품들을 제작하여, 대중성을 높이고 유기가 우리의 일상에 자리 잡을 수 있는 대상이 될 수 있도록 노력하였다.

이번 연구의 목적은 방짜유기가 가진 장점을 활용하여 금속공예 기물을 제작하는 것이었다. 실용성에 집중했다는 다소의 아쉬움도 남지만, 다양한 유기의 활용 가능성을 엿볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 생각한다. 또한 전통공예를 현대화하기 위한 과정 중의 하나로, 후속 연구의 방향을 제시한 것만으로도 가치가 있다고 본다. 또한, 체계적인 전승 교육보다는 오랜 시간 경험을 통해 체득되는 경우가 더 많은 전통공예 분야이기 때문에, 향후 이 연구는 유기에 관심 있는 후속 연구자들에게 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다. 이를 통해 유기를 소비하고, 누리는 사람이 많아지는 것에 그치지 않고, 유기를 제작하는 사람도 늘어나 더욱 다양한 유기 기물들이 제작되었으면 한다. 더 나아가 방짜유기가 전통문화를 넘어 오늘의 문화가 되어 우리 문화가 더욱 풍요로워지는 계기가 됐으면 한다.
