메릴 래더만 유클리스의 메인터넌스 미술 노동 퍼포먼스 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 1969년 <메인터넌스를 위한 선언문 1969! 《CARE》전시를 위한 프로포절 Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969! Proposal for an Exhibition CARE> 선언문에서 메인터넌스 미술을 처음 고안한 메릴 래더만 유클리스 (Mierle Laderman Ukeles, 1939-)의 1970년부터 1984년 진행된 노동 퍼포먼스에 관한 연구이다. 그녀가 텍스트로 만들어진 조각이라 부르는 1969년 선언문은 그녀의 초기 퍼포먼스 작업부터 2020년의 최근 작품의 개념적 주축이다. 선언문은 메인터넌스 미술의 정의와 이를 전시의 형태로 구상한 기획서로 구성되어 있다. 그녀가 고안한 미술은 메인터넌스 행위에 투입되는 막대한 시간과 자원에 비하여 사회적으로 변두리에 존재하는 노동을 환기시킨다.

유클리스가 사용하는메인터넌스의 광의는어떤 것을 계속하거나 그것을 존재하게 하는 과정이다. 따라서, 메인터넌스의 대상은 기계와 같은 사물, 가정집과 같은 공간, 다수가 사용하는 공공시설의 인프라, 그리고 보살핌이 필요한 사람 등으로 종류가 다양하다. 다시 말하면, 인간에 의해 만들어진 것은 메인터넌스의 대상이 된다. 또한, 누구나 메인터넌스의 행위를 어떤 방식으로든 수행하며, 동시에 이 행위의 수혜자가 되기도 한다. 작가는 선언문의 첫 장에서이제부터 나의 모든 노동(working)이 곧 작품(work)이다라고 주장한다. 이를 통해 자본주의의 핵심 행위자인 노동자를 양육하는 데에 필요한 노동과 삶을 영위하는 데에 필수적인 가사노동과 청결한 환경을 유지하기 위한 청소 노동을 미술의 영역으로 가져온다.

본고는 유클리스의 1970년부터 1980년대 중반까지의 메인터넌스 미술 퍼포먼스의 미술사적 의의를 분석한다. 그녀는 일상을 유지하고 지탱하는 노동을 직접 자신의 신체를 통해 퍼포먼스로 표현했다. 일상을 지속하는 노동은 여성에게 요구된 육아 및 가사노동과 도시의 청결을 유지하는 위생시설 노동과 같이 부각되지 않는 노동을 가리킨다. 그녀는 이러한 노동을 자신의 몸으로 직접 수행하는 것을 메인터넌스 미술로 명명하였다.

유클리스의 퍼포먼스는 미술관이나 상업화랑과 같은 특정 공간을 청소하며 관리하는 개인의 퍼포먼스에서 실제로 메인터넌스 노동을 수행하는 주체들과 협업하는 퍼포먼스로 확장되었다. 이로써 그녀의 육체적 노동은 사적인 영역에서 공적인 영역으로 이동시켜 부각 되지 않았던 것을 의식적으로 인지하도록 만든다. 그녀는 메인터넌스 노동의 중요성을 강조함과 동시에 개발의 존재와 필요성을 부정하지 않는다. 다만, 자본주의의 물질 만능 중심 사회에서 개발과 메인터넌스의 가치 사이에 존재하는 간극을 보여주는 작업을 한다. 그리고 자신의 작품을 통해 후자의 가치에 대한 재고와 사회적 논의의 필요성을 말한다

This study is on the early performance works of Mierle Laderman Ukeles, who first invented Maintenance Art in 1969 after giving birth to her first child. Her Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969! Proposition for an ExhibitionCAREdeclared the beginning of Maintenance Art. It also presents the meaning and explanation on why she had to create not only the manifesto but also Maintenance Art itself. The meaning of maintenance used by Ukeles refers to the act of processing or continuing something by making it exist and survive.In this context, Ukelesobjects of maintenance vary from machines, spaces, and infrastructures of public facilities to human beings. Furthermore, Ukeles reveals the labor of maintaining, sustaining, and supporting everyday life through her performance. By doing so, she presents the labor that maintains everyday life but is socially neglected and unappreciated. Her performances expand from an individualistic performance of cleaning and managing her home to museums and galleries and engaging, collaborative works with the actual laborers who provide maintenance works. In other words, the evident physicality in her works moves from the private sphere to the public sphere, which makes the once invisible work visible. Her works do not merely stress the importance of up-keeping daily life but emphasize the act of keeping the balance between development and maintenance. Furthermore, she reveals the gap that exists between the value of the antipodal values. Her works present the universality of maintenance that exists regardless of the nature of space by situating herself in the site of the labor through using her own body.
