미국 포토리얼리즘 회화의 미술사적 의미 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 1960년대 후반 미국에서 등장한 포토리얼리즘 회화의 미술사적 의미를 고찰한다. 포토리얼리즘은 사진을 보고 그린 회화로, 결과물은 사진에 가깝게 정교하고 사실적으로 나타난다. 본 논문에서는 포토리얼리즘의 의미를 사진이라는 매체와 리얼리즘 미술양식이 결합된 미술로 파악하고, 두 특징을 중점으로 연구를 확장시켰다. 포토리얼리즘 회화는 1960년대 후반과 1970년대에 걸쳐 여러 전시들을 통해 새로운 형상적 미술인 미국의 뉴 리얼리즘으로 소개되었다. 뉴 리얼리즘은 추상표현주의에 반하는 움직임으로 사실적인 것과 미술의 관계를 탐구하고자 했던 여러 미술양식을 아우르는 용어였다. 여기에 포함되었던 포토리얼리즘은 자기표현이 강한 동시대의 다른 미술양식과 비교되며 비판도 받았지만, 분명하게 주관적인 관점으로 외부세계에 밀접하게 반응하는 미술이었다. 본 연구에서는 포토리얼리즘 회화와 사진의 관계의 분석을 통해 포토리얼리스트가 세상을 어떻게 바라보고, 그것을 미술로 표현했는지 살펴본다. 그 중심에 있는 매체인 사진의 중요성을 강조하면서 다른 리얼리즘 회화와의 차이점을 설명한다. 더 나아가, 포토리얼리즘 미술이 미국의 새로운 리얼리즘 미술로서 시대를 어떤 시선으로 반영하고 상징적인 이미지를 제시하는지 해석한다. 마지막으로 일상생활 및 현대성과 깊게 관련된 특징을 가진 포토리얼리즘을 포스트모더니즘 미술로서 고려해본다. 본 연구는 포토리얼리즘이 사진을 기반으로 한 리얼리즘 미술로서 시대의 리얼리티를 어떻게 담아냈는지 질문하고, 동시대 다른 미술경향들과 1960년대 이전의 미국 리얼리즘들과의 연관성을 통해 포토리얼리즘 미술을 미술사에서 중요한 전환점으로 나타냈다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

This study explores Photorealism, a photography-based painting that emerged in the United States in the late 1960s. Photorealism is a style of painting carefully drawn from photographs, which appears highly realistic resembling the image of a photograph. In this study, the importance of Photorealism is identified as an art that combines two critical notions: photography and realism. Photorealism was introduced as New Realism in the United States through several art exhibitions throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. New Realism is a term that appeared in the early 1960s, encompassing a few various art movements that attempted to examine the relationship between reality and artwork, which was regarded as a movement against Abstract Expressionism. Although Photorealism was included in New Realism, it could not avoid criticism when it was compared to other contemporary art movements with noticeable self-expression. Nonetheless, this study asserts that it was an art movement that reacted closely with the outside world from a subjective perspective. Through the analysis of the relationship between Photorealism and photography, this study examines how the photorealists perceived the world, and how it was expressed in their paintings. By pointing out the importance of photography as an art medium, the study explains how Photorealism differs from other realism paintings in using photographs and delivering an idea. Furthermore, the study interprets how Photorealism brings its perception of the world into the painting and creates a symbolic image that can be suggested as a new realism art in the United States. Lastly, Photorealism is analyzed as a Postmodernism art by emphasizing that its image is deeply related to everyday life and modernity. This study aims to interpret how Photorealism reflected the reality of the era as a photography-based realism art, and presents it as an significant turning point in the history of art by considering its connections with other contemporary art movements and American realism art.
