한국어 중.고급 학습자의 문어 산출에 나타난 복잡성과 정확성 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 한국어 중·고급 학습자의 문어 산출에 나타난 복잡성과 정확성을 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 그동안 한국어교육에서 복잡성과 정확성을 고찰한 연구들이 이루어져 왔으나 복잡성과 정확성이 특정 과제, 즉 장르에 따라 어떠한 양상을 보이고 복잡성과 정확성 자체가 어떠한 관계를 가지고 발달하는지를 밝힌 연구는 아직까지 많이 부족하다. 특히 대부분의 연구들이 통사 복잡성에만 중점을 두고 연구를 진행해 왔다. 이에 본 연구에서는 학습자 언어를 다각적인 측면에서 분석하기 위해 학습자들이 산출한 언어에서 복잡성과 정확성이 숙달도 및 장르에 따라 어떻게 나타나는지를 살핀 후 복잡성과 정확성 구인 자체가 어떠한 관계를 가지고 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현재 한국 내 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 가운데 한국어능력시험 TOPIK 3급-6급 취득자를 모집하였으며, 이들이 산출한 문어 자료를 대상으로 복잡성과 정확성을 다차원적인 측면에서 측정하기 위해 여러 하위 측정 지표들을 사용하였다. 본 연구에서는 복잡성을 통사 복잡성과 어휘 복잡성으로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 통사 복잡성은 문장 길이, 문장 확장, 문장 확장 유형을 통해 측정하였으며, 어휘 복잡성은 어휘 다양도, 어휘 밀도, 어휘 정교도를 통해 측정하였다. 아울러 정확성은 무오류와 오류를 통해 측정하였는데 무오류의 경우 무오류절의 비율과 문장당 무오류절 수를 통해 측정하였으며, 오류의 경우 문장당 오류 수를 통해 측정하였다. 이러한 측정 지표들을 토대로 측정한 결과, 복잡성과 정확성을 측정하는 하위 지표들은 대체로 숙달도가 올라감에 따라 함께 향상되는 경향을 보였다. 하지만 유의미하게 증가하는 시기는 달랐는데 주로 중급 내(3급과 4급)에서나 중급(3급과 4급)과 고급(5급과 6급) 사이에 증가하였다. 복잡성과 정확성의 발달 차이를 비교해 본 결과, 어휘 복잡성이 통사 복잡성보다 느리게 발달한다는 점과 복잡성이 정확성에 비해 느리게 발달한다는 점을 확인하였다. 다음으로 복잡성과 정확성의 하위 지표들은 숙달도와 어떠한 관계를 가지고 있는지 확인해 본 결과, 통사 복잡성 측정 지표 중 문장 길이, 문장당 절의 개수, 문장당 내포절 수, 문장당 관형사절 수, 어휘 복잡성 측정 지표 중 어휘 다양도와 어휘 정교도는 숙달도가 올라감에 따라 함께 증가하는 관계로 나타났다. 정확성의 하위 지표 중 문장당 무오류절 수는 숙달도가 올라감에 따라 함께 증가하는 관계로 나타났다. 다음으로 장르 간의 차이를 분석한 결과, 복잡성을 측정하는 지표들은 모두 장르 유형에 따라 다르게 나타나 복잡성은 장르의 영향을 받는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 즉, 학습자들은 서사 장르에서 명사절과 부사절을 많이 산출하였으며, 어휘 밀도와 어휘 다양도가 높게 나타났다. 특히 논증 장르에서는 내포절의 사용이 뚜렷하였고, 관형사절과 인용절을 사용하여 더 긴 문장들을 생성하였으며, 어휘 정교도가 높게 나타났다. 그러나 정확성 측정의 경우 장르 간에 뚜렷한 차이를 보이지는 않았다. 마지막으로 복잡성과 정확성의 관계를 분석한 결과, 서사 장르와 논증 장르에서 모두 통사 복잡성과 정확성이 지지적인 관계로 동반 발달하였으나 어휘 복잡성과 정확성의 경우 지지적인 관계와 경쟁적인 관계로 발달하는 양상을 보였다. 이를 다시 숙달도 집단별로 분석한 결과, 숙달도 집단 및 장르에 따라 복잡성과 정확성의 관계는 때로는 지지적인 관계로 발달하고 때로는 경쟁적인 관계로 발달하며 어떤 때에는 지지적-경쟁적 관계로 발달한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해 복잡성과 정확성의 발달 관계는 장르 유형뿐만 아니라 숙달도에 따라 다르게 나타날 수 있다는 점을 확인했다. 이러한 분석 결과를 통해 도출한 시사점을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 통사 복잡성의 향상을 촉진시키기 위해서는 내포절을 사용한 문장 확장 교육이 이루어질 필요가 있다. 둘째, 어휘 복잡성의 향상을 촉진시키기 위해서는 유의관계의 교육과 고급 어휘의 사용을 늘릴 수 있는 교육이 필요하다. 셋째, 정확성의 향상을 촉진시키기 위해서는 본 연구를 통해 정확성을 저해하는 주요 요인으로 밝혀진 주격조사(이/가), 목적격조사(을/를)와 유사 의미를 가진 어휘에 대한 교육을 강화할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 장르는 복잡성과 정확성에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인이므로 다양한 장르의 글쓰기 교육을 통해 복잡성과 정확성의 향상을 촉진시키기 위해서는 장르를 고려한 교육이 이루어질 필요가 있다. 다섯째, 학습자의 숙달도에 따라 복잡성과 정확성이 다르게 발달하므로 학습자 언어의 복잡성과 정확성을 관찰할 때 장르뿐만 아니라 숙달도 수준도 함께 고려할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 한국어 중·고급 학습자들의 문어 산출에 나타난 복잡성과 정확성을 숙달도가 향상됨에 따라 어떻게 발달하였는지를 밝혔을 뿐만 아니라 기존 연구들에서 주목 받지 못했던 장르에 관심을 두고 복잡성과 정확성이 장르 유형에 따라 어떻게 나타나는지를 구체적으로 밝혔다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 기존 연구에서 찾아보기 어려운 복잡성과 정확성 구인 자체가 어떠한 관계를 가지고 발달하였는지를 규명했을 뿐만 아니라 각 숙달도 집단에서도 복잡성과 정확성이 장르에 따라 어떠한 발달 관계로 발달하였는지를 구체적으로 밝혔다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

This study examines the complexity and accuracy of written language by intermediate and advanced learners of Korean. Until now, studies have examined complexity and accuracy in Korean language education; however, studies that reveal how complexity and accuracy appear according to specific tasks, that is, genres, and the relationship between complexity and accuracy, remain insufficient. In particular, most have focused only on syntactic complexity. Therefore, to analyze the learner's language from various aspects, this study attempted to clarify the relationship between complexity and accuracy after examining how they appear according to proficiency and genre in the language calculated by learners. To this end, foreign students currently attending universities in Korea were recruited to acquire TOPIK level 3 to 6, and the octopus data calculated were analyzed for complexity and accuracy. Several sub-measurement indicators were used to measure complexity and accuracy in a multidimensional way. Complexity was divided into syntactic complexity and lexical complexity. Syntax complexity was measured through sentence length, extension, and extension type; and lexical complexity was measured through lexical diversity, density, and sophistication. In addition, accuracy was measured through error free and error. As a result of measurement based on these metrics, sub-indicators that measure complexity and accuracy generally tended to improve together as their proficiency increased. However, the period of significant increase was different, mainly between intermediate (level 3 and 4) or between intermediate (level 3 and 4) and advanced (level 5 and 6). Comparing the development differences between complexity and accuracy, it was confirmed that the development of lexical complexity occurs later than the development of syntactic complexity, and complexity develops slowly compared to accuracy. Next, as a result of checking how the sub-indicators of complexity and accuracy have a relationship with proficiency, the length of sentences, the number of clauses per sentence, the number of subordinate clauses per sentence, and the lexical diversity and lexical sophistication among the measurement indicators of lexical complexity increase with proficiency. Among accuracys sub-indicators, the number of error-free clauses per sentence increased together as the degree of proficiency increased. Next, an analysis of the differences between genres showed that all indicators measuring complexity differed depending on the genre type, and complexity was also affected by the genre. In other words, learners calculated many noun and adverb clauses in the narrative genre according to its characteristics, and lexical density and lexical diversity were high. In particular, in the argumentation genre, the use of subordinate clauses was clear, and longer sentences were generated using modifying and quotation clauses; vocabulary accuracy was high. However, in the case of accuracy measurement, there was no clear difference between genres. Finally, as a result of analyzing the relationship between complexity and accuracy, syntactic complexity and accuracy developed together in both narrative and argument genres, but lexical complexity and accuracy developed in a competitive relationship with the supportive relationship. As a result of analyzing this again by proficiency group, it was found that the relationship between complexity and accuracy sometimes develops into a supportive relationship, sometimes a competitive relationship, and sometimes a supportive-competitive relationship, depending on the basis of the proficiency group and genre. This confirmed that the developmental relationship between complexity and accuracy may appear differently depending on the genre type as well as proficiency. The implications from these analysis results are summarized as follows. First, to promote the improvement of syntactic complexity, it is necessary to provide sentence expansion education using subordinate clauses. Second, promoting the improvement of lexical complexity requires providing education that can increase the use of advanced-level vocabulary. Third, to promote the improvement of accuracy, it is necessary to conduct an investigation of important factors that impair accuracy in this study and education to reduce vocabulary errors. Fourth, genre is an important factor influencing complexity and accuracy; to promote the improvement of complexity and accuracy during writing education requires considering the genre. Fifth, when observing the complexity and accuracy of the learner's language, it is necessary to consider not only the genre but also the proficiency level. This study is significant in that it not only revealed how the complexity and accuracy of Korean intermediate and advanced learners developed as their proficiency improved, but also revealed how complexity and accuracy appeared depending on the genre type. . It is significant in that it not only revealed the developmental relationship between complexity and accuracy in the two genres, but also revealed specifically what kind of developmental relationship complexity and accuracy developed according to the genre in each proficiency group.
