조해일 소설에 나타난 1970년대 한국의 현대화 양상

Abstract

본고는 조해일 소설에 나타난 1970년대 현대화 양상을 연구하고자 하는 글이다. 조해일 문학을 논하는 데 있어 간과할 수 없는 두 요소는 그는 산업화시기를 경험한 작가이자 남성작가라는 사실이다. 그는 「겨울여자」이라는 작품으로 베스트셀러작가로 되었다. 이로 인해 많은 사람들은 그를 대중소설 작가로만 인식했다. 대중소설은 대중성을 우선으로 생각하는 장르로써 문학성이 부족하다는 비판을 많이 듣는다. 특히 대부분의 연구들은 조해일을 당대 이데올로기와 무관한 작가라고 판단해왔다. 조해일은 모든 문제를 관념화하지 않고 일상적인 생활의 문제로 풀어나간다. 자본주의 사회가 관념적인 영역에서 개인을 지배하는 것이 아니라 보이지 않는 손으로 일상적인 영역을 지배함을 인식한 작가의 현실 인식에서 가는한 것이다. 일상적인 생활을 살아가는 일상적인 사람들의 구체적인 문제들을 포착하는 것은 또한 조해일 소설의 미적 특징이다. 일상적인 인물을 소설의 주인공으로 설정하고, 일상적인 생활에서 발생하는 자잘한 일들을 소설의 사건으로 설정한 것은 근대소설까지 없었다. 현대소설에 와서야 소설가들은 개인에 대한 자각이나 자아의 각성이라는 담론에 의해 개인의 문제에 대한 의미를 부여하게 되었으며, 그럼에 따라 개인에게 일어나는 자잘한 일상적인 문제들이 의미하는 것으로 인식하게 되었던 것이다. 이로 하여 일상성은 근대 사회의 개인에 대한 문제를 중시한 현대성의 중요한 요소로서 자리 잡게 되었다. 그렇다면 현대성의 한 양상으로서 일상성이 소설 속에 서사화 된 양상이 구체적으로 어떠한 모습으로 드러나는가를 살펴보도록 하겠다. 조해일 소설에 대한 접근은 일상생활을 하는 근대적 자아가 어떤 모습으로 설정되고 있으며, 이러한 인물이 살아가는 근대 사회의 문제가 무엇인지에 모아져야 한다. 소설은 사회를 반영하며 사회를 이야기한다. 1970년은 한국 경제가 급속하게 발전하는 시기였다. 하지만 여태껏 조해일에 관한 연구는 폭력, 도덕, 남성성 등에 머물러 있었다. 그래서 본고는 조해일의 「매일 죽는 사람」 「뿔」 「아메리카」 「겨울여자」를 선택하여 이 텍스트로 부터 1970년대 한국사회의 현대화 과정을 알아보려하는데 목적이 있다. 이 4편의 텍스트는 작가가 제도의 폭력성을 비롯한 산업화 시대의 다양한 모순이 지닌 비인간성과 불합리성을 비판하고 있음을 보여준다.

This paper aims to study the aspects of modernization in the 1970s in Jo Hae-il's novels. Two factors that cannot be overlooked in discussing Jo Hae-il's literature are the fact that he is a male writer and a writer who experienced the industrialization period. He became a best-selling author with the work "Winter Woman". Because of this, many people recognized him only as a popular novel writer. Popular fiction is a genre that prioritizes popularity and is often criticized for its lack of literature. In particular, most studies have judged Cho Hae-il to be a writer independent of his contemporary ideology. Haeil Jo solves problems of everyday life without conceptualizing them all. It is a departure from the artist's realization that capitalist society does not dominate the individual in the ideological realm, but dominates the everyday realm with the 'invisible hand'. It is also an aesthetic feature of Jo Hae-il's novel to capture the specific problems of everyday people living their daily lives. There were no modern novels that set everyday characters as the protagonists of the novel and the small things that occur in everyday life as the events of the novel. It is only in modern novels that novelists have come to give meaning to individual problems by discourse of awareness of 'individual' or awakening of 'self'. it has become As a result, everyday life has been established as an important element of 'modernity' that emphasizes the problem of individuals in modern society. Then, as an aspect of 'modernity', let's take a look at how the aspect of everydayness being narrated in the novel is revealed in detail. The approach to Jo Hae-il's novel should be focused on what the modern self in daily life is set in, and the problems of the modern society in which these characters live. The novel reflects society and tells the story of society. 1970 was a period of rapid economic development in Korea. However, so far, research on Jo Hae-il has been confined to violence, morality, and masculinity. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the modernization process of Korean society in the 1970s from this text by selecting The Man Who Dies Every Day, America and Winter Woman by Hae-il Jo. These four texts show that the author criticizes the inhumanity and irrationality of various contradictions in the industrialization era, including institutional violence.
