코로나 19 이후 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감이 우울감에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구는 코로나 19라는 특수한 상황 속에서 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감과 우울감의 관계를 탐색하고, 그 관계에 영향을 미치는 대처양식, 사회적 지지, 자아존중감 등 변인에 대해 살펴보았다. 연구의 목적은 한국 거주 중국인의 차별양상을 분석하고 정신건강을 살펴봄으로써 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감을 줄이고 정신건강을 증진하는 포용성 이민정책을 마련하는데 기초를 제공하는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 연구에서는 한국 거주 중국인을 대상으로 2022년 3월 15일부터 3월 25일까지 온라인 설문 조사를 진행하였고, 다음의 결과를 도출하였다. 첫째, 본 연구에서 조사한 결과 한국 거주 중국인들의 지각된 차별감 정도는 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 한국 거주 중국인의 우울감을 살펴보았을 때 전반적으로 높게 나타났고 특히 남성이 여성보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감, 우울감, 대처양식, 사회적 지지, 자아존중감은 유의미한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한국 거주 중국인의 우울감 수준은 지각된 차별감이 높을수록, 대처양식이 높을수록, 사회적 지지가 낮을수록, 자아존중감이 낮을수록 유의하게 낮게 나타났다. 넷째, 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감은 우울감에 정(+)적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 위계적 회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 지각된 차별감과 우울감의 관계에서 대처양식의 매개효과가 확인되었다. 지각된 차별감이 대처양식에 미치는 영향과 우울감에 미치는 영향은 유의했으며, 대처양식이 중재된 상황에서 지각된 차별감이 우울감에 미치는 영향 역시 유의했다. 본 연구는 코로나 19 상황에서 한국 거주 중국인의 지각된 차별감이 어느 수준인지 실증적으로 밝히고 한국 거주 중국인의 우울감을 살펴봄으로써 정신건강에 대해 전반적인 관심을 촉구하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 그러나 연구결과의 일반화에 어려움이 있으며 사회적 지지와 자아존중감의 효과를 구체적으로 제시할 필요가 있다. 또한, 우울감 외의 지표를 다양하게 측정함으로써 한국 거주중국인의 지각된 차별감이 정신건강에 미치는 부정적 영향을 보다 면밀하게 살펴보는 것도 필요하다.

This study explores the relationship between perceived discrimination and depression, and examines variables such as coping strategies, social support and self-esteem among Chinese nationals in Korea during the COVID-19 crisis. The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of discrimination among Chinese nationals in Korea and examine their mental health and levels of perceived discrimination. Ultimately, this analysis will provide a basis for establishing policy implications on immigration policies to improve inclusiveness of Chinese nationals, with emphasis on their mental health. In order to achieve this objective, the study surveyed 350 Chinese nationals in Korea between March 15 and March 25, 2022. The study findings are the following: First, the perceived degree of discrimination among Chinese nationals in Korea was high. Second, the depression of Chinese nationals in Korea was high, with men being more depressed than women. Third, there are significant correlations among depression, perceived discrimination, coping strategies, social support and self-esteem. The level of depression increased with higher levels of discrimination and coping strategies, lower levels of social support and lower levels of self-esteem. Fourth, the perceived discrimination of Chinese residents in Korea had a positive (+) effect on depression. Fifth, as a result of hierarchical regression analysis, the mediating effect of coping style was confirmed on the relationship between perceived discrimination and depression. The effect of perceived discrimination on coping style and on depression was significant, as well as the impact of perceived discrimination on depression in the situation where the coping style was mediated. This empirical study reveals the level of discrimination against Chinese nationals in Korea during the COVID-19 crisis. Furthermore, the study underlines the necessity for, and the importance of mental health promotion among Chinese nationals in Korea, a notion that is emphasized as a method to cope with depression. However, the study also revealed difficulties in normalizing its results. Therefore, the effects of social support and self-esteem on mental health of Chinese nationals necessitates further analysis. Additionally, the study outlines the significance of closely monitoring the effects of mental health indicators, other than depression, on the perceived discrimination of Chinese nationals in Korea.
