Abstract
Background As products are advanced, physical movement is actively applied to electronic products, robots, and interfaces to reinforce the decreasing physical experience, and such product movement requires to evoke positive product emotion. Therefore, this study aims to propose an analysis model of product movement and analyze product cases through the model, which is expected to explain the relationship between movement components and product emotion. Methods Based on the preceding studies, this study derived a diagram that explains the relationship between movement and emotion. In addition, this study proposes an analysis model of product movement by redefining the movement element differently depending on the perspective of researchers. With the analysis model, we analyzed various product movement cases. Results Movement enhances the emotional value of a product, and regardless of the designer's intentions, users receive emotions or reflect their emotions through product movement. Movement can be divided into Phase and defined as three components: Form (Material, Volume) as a formal characteristic, Mechanical (Path) as a positional characteristic, and Behavioral (Direction, Speed) as a dynamic character that has a time component. Using this model, this study analyzes the movement of products for functional performance, movement for interaction, and movement for aesthetic emotion. Conclusions Using the analysis model of movement, this study is expected to contribute to the use of movement as a design tool. However, in order to reveal the relation between movement components and product emotion, further research is needed to examine whether there are any differences between functional and emotional movements. Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to find out what kind of correlation there is between movement elements of a product used in daily life and product emotion.
