순자의 군(群) 개념을 통해 본 욕망과 본성 - 인간과 동물의 구분을 중심으로 -

Abstract

군과 관련해 순자의 사상은 두 단계로 구성되어 있다고 말할 수 있다. 첫째는 군의 필요성을 강조하는 단계이다. 인간에게 군은 인간을 만물의 영장이게끔 해주는 것이기에 앞서 인간이 생존하기 위한 기본 조건이다. 그리고 이 점이 이어지는 논의의 기본 방향을 마련한다. 이로 인해 순자는 인간의 욕망과 감정을 군의 형성과 유지라는 점에서 평가한다. 그는 인간의 욕망과 감정 자체가 악하다고 평가하지 않지만 인간의 욕망과 감정이 군 안에서는 문제를 일으킨다고 보았기 때문에 결국 인간의 욕망과 감정을 주된 내용으로 갖고 있는 본성에 대해 악하다고 주장하게 된다. 둘째는 군 안에 구현되는 질서에 대해 논하는 단계이다. 이 단계에서 순자는 인간과 동물 사이의 비교가 아니라 인간이 만들어 낸 관습과 사상들에 대한 평가와 비판을 진행하고 예를 대안으로 제시하는 것이다. 인간의 감정과 욕망, 그리고 본성에 대한 논의는 처음에는 인간이 갖는 결함을 지적하기 위해서만 존재하는 것처럼 보이지만 이 단계에서는 순자가 이상적으로 생각하는 군의 질서를 구현할 장소로 존재한다. 즉 인간의 변화가 이루어질 수 있는 바탕으로 기능하게 되는 것이다. 이것이 인간의 군이 순자가 생각하는 예를 원래 갖고 있다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다. 오히려 인간의 군이 예를 받아들일 수 있는다는 의미에서 적극적인 가능성을 갖는만큼, 인간의 감정과 욕망, 그리고 본성 역시 이러한 적극적인 가능성을 갖는다고 말할 수 있다.

Xunzi's thought on qun 群 consists of two stages. In the first stage the discussion centers on the necessity of a society. For the human kind, the ability to form a society not only enables him to rule as 'lord of all creation' but also forms a basic condition for survival. In this context, Xunzi evaluates human desires and emotions by the standard of formation and continuation of the society. When he states that human nature is 'evil' it does not mean human desires and emotions are in themselves so, but that human nature which consists mainly of desires and emotions cause problems within the society. In the second stage the discussion focuses on order realized within the society. Xunzi goes beyond comparison between mankind and beasts, extends the evaluation to man-made customs and philosophies, finally offering ritual (li 禮) as the ultimate alternative. Censuring human deficiency seems initially to be Xunzi's main purpose in his discussion of human desires, emotions and nature, but in this second stage he reveals that human nature is what allows the realization of the ideal society, as it functions as the backdrop of human transformation. This does not signify Xunzi believed the society is equipped with ritual to begin with. Nevertheless, the potential lies in that the human society is capable of embracing and realizing ritual as the ideal system, just as human desires, emotions and nature is potentially capable of transformation.
