Interpreting Jean-Francois Zevacos Space Making Strategy (1953-1995)

Abstract

This research targets the spatial and formal study of the design methodologies utilized by Jean Francois Zevaco in his projects and the possibility that they can be heavily inspired by the 'Les 4 Compositions strategy developed by Le Corbusier in 1929. Les 4 Compositions contains 4 different design strategies elaborated by Charles Édouard Jeanneret, the famous Swiss-French architect more known by Le Corbusier in his well-known publication Œuvre Complète Volume I. Four examples of his private housing projects were exhibited, respectively being Villa La Roche constructed in 1923, Villa Stein- in 1927, Villa à Carthage- in 1928, and finally ending with Villa Savoye realized in 1929. These 4 projects were utilized to showcase 4 different propositions of space compositions and design strategies, each one accompanied by comments on the effectiveness and the individual characteristics of both interior and exterior aspects. AlthoughLes 4 Compositions is not as utilized or known in the architectural field compared to its peers of design methodologies such as Le Modulor or 5 Points of Modern Architecture, it remains a great addition to the understanding of how designing interior spaces can be related to the external form. With this being said, the main purpose of examining if Jean Francois Zevaco followed Les 4 Compositions of Le Corbusier is to determine whether these 4 strategies can be successfully applied in different contexts and diversified projects in nature, in this case, projects built by Zevaco in Morocco. A formal analysis is carried out in both directions. First by studying Le CorbusiersLes 4 compositions, then by analyzing Jean Francois Zevacos built projects depending on information availability. This helps to have a deeper base to assess the degree of successful usage of each composition from Le Corbusier in Zevacos projects in Morocco. Consequently, this study can cast light on how important it is to understand the importance of Les 4 Compositions as a space-making design methodology as well as see real-life examples of how successful or unsuccessful architects can be when incorporating such designs in other projects and contexts.

본 연구는 장 프랑수아 제바코가 자기 건축 프로젝트에서 활용한 공간적과 형식적 이론에 나타난 디자인 방법론을 분석하고 이러한 디자인의 방법론은 1929년 르 코르뷔지에가 제시한 'Les 4 Compositions'의 공간구성 전략과 어떠한 연관성이 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 'Les 4 Compositions'는 네 가지의 건축 사례를 포함하는, 르 코르뷔지에가 그의 유명한 출판물인 'Oeuvre Complete Volume I'에서 제시한 공간구성 전략이다. 건축 사례로는 1923년에 지어진 빌라 라 로슈, 1927년에 지어진 빌라 스타인, 1928년에 빌라 아 카르타고, 1929년에 실현된 빌라 사보아가 있다. 르 코르뷔지에는 이러한 4개의 프로젝트를 통해 공간구성과 설계전략의 4가지 제안을 제시하였고 각각의 제안은 내·외부적 측면에서 효과성과 개별적 특성에 대한 것이다. 'Les 4 Compositions'는 건축 분야에서 Le Modulor나 5 Points of Modern Architecture와 같은 설계 방법론에 비해 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 하지만 내부 공간을 설계하는 것이 외부 형태와 어떻게 관련될 수 있는지에 대한 이해에 큰 추가로 남아 있다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 장 프랑수아 제바코가 르 코르뷔지에의 'Les 4 Compositions'를 따랐는지를 살펴보는 것이 본 연구의 주된 목적이다. 또한 이러한 4가지 전략이 서로 다른 맥락에서 성공적으로 적용될 수 있는지 여부와 자연적으로 다양화된 프로젝트, 이 경우에는 모로코의 제바코가 건설한 프로젝트를 결정하는 것이다. 공식적인 분석을 양방향으로 수행하고자 한다. 먼저 르 코르뷔지에의 'Les 4 구성'을 연구한 뒤, 정보 가용성에 따라 장 프랑수아 제바코가 구축한 프로젝트를 분석한다. 이것은 모로코에서 제바코의 프로젝트에서 르 코르뷔지에의 각 구성물의 성공적인 사용 정도를 평가할 수 있는 더 깊은 기반을 갖는 데 도움이 된다. 따라서 본 연구는 공간 만들기 설계방법론으로서 'Les 4 Compositions'의 중요성을 이해하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 조명할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이러한 설계를 다른 프로젝트와 맥락에서 통합할 때 건축가들이 얼마나 성공할 수 있는지에 대한 실제 사례를 살펴볼 수 있다.
