온라인 시각 환경 속 이미지의 디지털 콜라주 연구

Abstract

Through my works from 2021 to 2022, this study examines the significance of being conscious of the influence of digital images by physically implementing digital collages that were recombined from digital images found in an online visual environment. Based on my nomadic life background, my work begins with collecting images of products that I could not own in real life through personalized algorithmic platforms. Collected images are recombined into digital collages, which represent personalized advertisement images on Instagram or other algorithm-based platforms, depending on the work. In this way, the source of the original image gives meaning and value to the digital collage. The collages in 《Algorithm Diary》 are made from Instagram advertising contents and are meant to depict the advertising images on the platform. The series is published on an Instagram account and shared as a replicable object by multiple users on the network. A characteristic of online digital images is that they can only be viewed via digital devices, allowing access to thousands of images in a short period of time. Digital images are often consumed lightly and seem to pass by, but they impact our perceptions and way of thinking. I aim to convey the importance of preserving ones subjectivity and being aware of the influence of personalized contents while inhabiting this online visual environment exposed by algorithm-based platforms through slow acceptance of fast-consumed online images. Digital collages were transformed into two main forms during this process. First, the physical implementation through everyday objects signifies the ripple effect of online digital images, taking up the surrounding indoor space by visualizing the online visual environment. Second, materializing digital collage images through hand sewing and printing on fabric deviates from the characteristics of online digital images. Due to these implementations, images are consumed at a slower rate than when they are displayed digitally. This emphasizes texture, stereoscopicity, and gravity as well as requiring the viewer to physically enter the exhibition. As my work evolved throughout this study, I discovered new aspects of algorithm-based platforms. The purpose of this study is not to argue for or against the algorithm system. Rather, it is more about showing the flow structure of digital images online, as well as how critical it is to use an algorithm system without losing ones uniqueness. As my work deals with several layers of subjects, I hope it will generate many interpretations from different perspectives when it is read.

이 연구에서 나는 2021년부터 2022년까지 작업한 작품을 통해 디지털 콜라주를 물리적으로 구현하여 온라인 시각 환경 속 디지털 이미지의 영향력을 자각하고 인식하고자 하였다. 나의 작업은 유목민적 삶으로부터 비롯된 사물의 소유와 정착에 대한 욕망으로부터 시작되어, 실제로 소유할 수 없는 상품의 이미지를 개인 맞춤형 알고리즘 기반 플랫폼 내에서 수집하는 것으로 이어진다. 수집된 이미지는 디지털 콜라주로 재조합되어 작품에 따라 인스타그램 및 알고리즘 기반 플랫폼 내의 개인 맞춤 이미지를 상징적으로 나타낸다. 따라서 이 디지털 콜라주는 원본 이미지의 출처로부터 의미와 가치를 부여받는다. 그 중《알고리즘 다이어리》연작은 인스타그램 내부에서 수집된 광고 이미지를 상징적으로 나타내며 인스타그램을 통해 공개되어 네트워크에 속한 여러 사용자에 의해 복제 가능한 개체로 공유된다. 온라인 디지털 이미지의 특징은 디지털 기기의 화면을 매개로 볼 수 있어 많은 이미지가 단시간에 접속될 수 있기 때문에 조회되는 이미지 대부분을 기억하기 어렵다는 것이다. 이러한 온라인 디지털 이미지는 가볍게 소비될 때가 많고, 스쳐 지나가는 것처럼 보이지만 실제로는 우리의 생각하는 방식과 무언가에 대한 견해에 영향을 끼친다. 나는 이러한 디지털 콜라주를 통해 알고리즘 기반 플랫폼 속 개인화 콘텐츠의 영향력에 대한 자각과 빠른 속도로 소비되는 온라인 이미지를 느리게 수용하는 것을 통하여 개인의 주관성을 유지하는 것에 대해 전달하고자 한다. 이 과정에서 디지털 콜라주를 크게 두 가지 형태로 변형하였는데, 첫 번째 방법인 일상 사물을 통한 물리적 구현은 비물성인 온라인 시각 환경을 물리적으로 구현하여 부피감으로 공간을 차지한다는 점과 실내에서 사용된다는 특징을 이용해 작품이 감상자를 둘러싸게 하여 우리를 포위하는 온라인 디지털 이미지를 나타낸다. 두 번째 방법인 손바느질과 천을 매개로 콜라주 이미지를 드러내는 방식은 가상적이며 많은 개수와 빠른 속도로 소비되는 온라인 디지털 이미지의 특징에서 벗어난다. 이 방식은 재질감, 입체감과 중력감을 강조하며, 디지털 이미지보다 비교적 느리게 소비된다는 특징을 지니게 되어, 무분별하게 소비되는 온라인 이미지에 대한 자각을 제시한다. 나의 작업은 작업의 과정을 통해 온라인 알고리즘 기반 플랫폼의 새로운 면모를 발견함에 따라 작업의 목적이 변화하였다. 나는 이 플랫폼의 시스템에 대해 찬성이나 반대의 주장을 하는 것이 아니다. 그 안에서 접하는 콘텐츠의 범주 안에 갇히기보다 주체적으로 개인의 주관성을 유지하는 것과, 이것의 영향력에 대해 의식하는 것에 대한 중요성을 나타내고자 한다. 나의 작품이 전반적으로 다루는 주제의 층위가 여러 개인 만큼, 이것이 읽힐 때도 다양한 관점으로 풍부하게 해석되었으면 한다.
