Determination of appropriate sample size for investigation of exposure factor of childrens products

Abstract

Introduction: Representative exposure factors for childrens products are necessary for accurate exposure assessment. Because of practical limitations, the exposure factors have been collected from smaller sample size. The purpose of the study was to estimate and determine the appropriate sample size required for the representative exposure factors of childrens products.

Methods: A national representative survey for exposure factor of childrens products was conducted with 10,000 children aged 0 to 12 in the 2 seasons. A face-to-face survey was conducted on the usage patterns (rate of use (%), frequency of use (event/day), and time of use (min/event)) for a total of 59 childrens products in 5 categories. Childrens products with the rate of use of 25% or more in all age groups were considered for further study. The 4 age groups were also considered. Exposure factors with different sample sizes were simulated 10,000 times. The 4 different percentiles (50th, 75th, 85th, and 95th) for each sampling were compared with each percentile of the population. The appropriate sample sizes were determined when the ratios of each percentile was between 0.9 and 1.1.

Results: Exposure factors of 59 childrens products were determined for the 4 age groups in summer and winter. Comparing the results for the 4 different percentiles, the 85th percentile provided the most appropriate sample size for time of use of childrens products in most age groups at the sample size 500 or less. Generally, as the sample size increases, uncertainty decreased. However, some products tended to move out of range as the sample size increased. At the sample size of 200, 29 out of 34, 31 out of 38, 28 out of 34, and 29 out of 35 childrens products were similar to the frequency of use in the population. Moreover, 30 out of 32, 33 out of 34, 26 out of 30, and 29 out of 31 childrens products were similar to the time of use in the population at the sample size of 200.

Conclusion: The appropriate sample sizes were slightly different according to childrens products and age groups. Moreover, some childrens products were out of the range 0.9 to 1.1 by several large values in the population. As a result, sample size should be carefully selected to investigate the exposure factor for childrens products in the further studies. Moreover, it can be used for estimating the exposure of the high exposure group.

서론: 어린이가 자주 접하는 어린이용품에 대해 적절한 노출계수를 이용한 정확한 노출평가가 필요하다. 노출계수를 구하는 연구에서 인구 집단 대표 노출계수를 구하기 위해서는 인구 집단 전체를 조사해야 하지만, 비용 및 시간 등의 현실적인 문제의 발생으로 작은 표본을 기반으로 진행되어왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 연령별 어린이용품 노출계수 표본크기에 따른 모집단과의 비율을 나타내어 노출계수를 조사하는데 필요한 표본크기를 추정하고 이를 기준으로 선정하는 것이다.

연구방법: 어린이용품 국민대표 노출계수 설문조사를 2017년 여름과 2018년 겨울에 각각 10,000명의 0-12세 어린이를 대상으로 진행하였다. 연구집단인 0-12세 어린이에 대하여 0-2세는 영아, 3-6세는 유아, 7-9세는 저학년, 10-12세는 고학년으로 연령그룹을 4개로 나누었다. 어린이용품 총 59개 대하여 사용패턴 노출계수인 사용률 (%), 사용빈도 (event/day), 그리고 사용시간 (min/event)을 대면으로 설문 조사하였다. 본 연구에서 조사대상인 어린이용품은 모든 연령그룹에서 사용률이 25% 이상인 어린이용품으로 선정하였다. 노출계수를 4개의 분위수 (50th, 75th, 85th, 95th)를 기준으로 표본크기별 모집단의 각 분위수 값과의 비교를 위해 모집단을 12개의 표본크기 (N=10, 20, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 300, 400, 500)로 구분하여 이를 참값인 모집단의 분위수와 비교하였다.

연구결과 및 고찰: 각 어린이용품마다 12개의 표본크기별로 4개의 분위수 (50th, 75th, 85th, 95th) 평균값과 모집단 분위수 값을 비율로 나타내었을 때 0.9와 1.1 사이에 존재하는 경우 해당 표본크기를 어린이용품의 노출계수를 조사하기 위한 기준으로 선정하였다. 4개의 분위수에 대한 결과를 비교하면 85분위수의 사용시간 노출계수가 가장 많은 연령그룹에서 적절한 표본크기를 제공하였다. 그리고 전반적으로 표본크기가 커짐에 따라 모집단 값에 가까워져 불확실성은 감소하는 경향을 보였다.

결론: 적절한 표본크기는 어린이용품과 연령그룹에 따라 차이가 존재하였다. 또한, 일부 어린이용품은 표본크기가 증가함에 따라 모집단과의 비율이 범위를 벗어나는 경향을 보였다. 이는 모집단의 분포를 분석을 통해 몇 가지 큰 값이 원인임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해, 향후 어린이용품 노출계수를 조사하는데 필요한 조사대상의 적절한 표본크기를 이용하여 더욱 정확한 어린이용품 노출평가를 진행하는데 기여할 수 있다.
