케이팝의 현지화와 토착화

Abstract

케이팝이 세계적 인기를 얻는 가운데 여러 지역에서 케이팝에 영향을 받은 음악이 나타나고 있다. 이들은 케이팝과 유사한 스타일을 가지고 있지만 스스로 케이팝이 아니라 자국 팝이라고 주장한다. 이러한 현상을 케이팝의 토착화라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 케이팝의 토착화 현상은 일본, 미국, 유럽 음악 등에 영향을 받은 혼종문화인 케이팝이 다시 다른 혼종문화의 재료가 되고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 이는 케이팝이 대중음악 분야에서 다른 나라가 전유할 수 있는 하나의 모델이 되고 있음을 의미한다. 이에 본 연구는 케이팝의 토착화 현상의 대표적인 사례로 필리핀의 피팝 보이그룹 SB19을 선정하고, 뮤직비디오 멀티모달리티 분석과 팬 인터뷰를 통해 피팝의 케이팝 전유를 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 먼저 피팝이 케이팝의 어떤 요소를 어떻게 전유하고 있는지 살펴보기 위해 케이팝과 피팝을 미학적, 산업적, 팬덤적 실천 세 가지 측면에서 비교하였다. 미학적 실천 측면에서 피팝은 케이팝식 춤, 뮤직비디오 등을 통해 시각적인 매력을 강화했다. 산업적 실천 측면에서는 연습생 시스템과 소셜미디어 홍보 전략을 도입했고, 팬덤적 실천 측면에서는 투표, 스트리밍 등 케이팝 팬덤의 조직적인 동원 전략을 주로 전유하고 있었다. 다음으로 본 연구는 피팝의 정체성 형성 과정을 재구성하였다. 피팝은 케이팝을 흉내낼 뿐이라는 비판을 받게 되면서 SB19과 그 팬덤은 피팝의 혼종적 정체성을 교섭해야 했다. 그래서 이들은 피팝에 필리핀 정체성을 부여하기 위해 다양한 전략을 사용하고 있다. 그 결과 피팝은 필리핀 음악이라는 정체성을 확립하고 있지만 그 구체적인 정의는 아직 형성 중에 있다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 피팝이 케이팝 모델을 전유한 이유, 그리고 이때 케이팝 모델이 갖는 의미에 대해 논의하였다. 피팝 팬들에게 케이팝 모델이 매력적인 이유는 혼종적인 문화임에도 강한 국가적 정체성을 드러내며, 국가 경제 및 국가 브랜드에 기여하기 때문이다. 또한 케이팝 모델은 표준화된 연습생 시스템 덕분에 비교적 쉽게 적용될 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 케이팝 모델은 미국 문화의 헤게모니에 대한 대안을 제공해준다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 하지만 개인적 노력을 강조하고 궁극적으로는 미국 시장에서의 성공을 목표로 한다는 점에서 신자유주의적 주체의 생산과 서구 중심적 구도를 강화한다는 한계를 지닌다.

As K-pop gains global popularity, similar music styles are emerging in other regions. They claim that they are developing a new local genre inspired by K-pop. This phenomenon can be termed the indigenization of K-pop. K-pop—a hybrid culture of American, Japanese, and European music itself— now helps form a new hybrid culture in these regions, by providing a new model other countries can appropriate. This study investigates this appropriation using a case study of a P-pop idol group SB19 in the Philippines. Its method includes a multimodality analysis of SB19's music videos and fan interviews. To analyze what elements P-pop appropriates from K-pop and how it does so, this study compared K-pop and P-pop in three aspects: aesthetics, business, and fandom practices. In aesthetic practices, P-pop enhanced its visual appeal with K-pop-style dances and music videos. In business practices, it adopts training systems and social media promotion strategies. In fandom practices, it appropriates organized mobilization strategies such as voting and streaming. This study also attempts to capture the identity formation of P-pop. In response to the criticism that P-pop is a K-pop copycat, SB19 and its fandom need to negotiate its hybrid identity. So SB19 and its fandom use various strategies to give P-pop a Filipino identity. P-pop is now establishing itself as legitimate Filipino music in these efforts, but its definition is still contested. Finally, this study examines the reason why P-pop appropriates the K-pop model and its implications. According to fans, the K-pop model is attractive because, despite its hybrid nature, K-pop still has a strong national identity and contributes to national branding and the economy. In addition, they recognize K-pop as a feasible model for the Philippines, particularly with its standardized training system. An important implication of this appropriation is that the K-pop model can provide an alternative to hegemonic American popular music. Yet, it can also reinforce the reproduction of neoliberal subjects and Western-centered perspectives as it emphasizes individual effort and set its ultimate goal toward success in the U.S.
