『워더링 하이츠』에 나타난 유령성과 개인화

Abstract

에밀리 브론테는 『워더링 하이츠』에서 삼 세대의 뒤엉킨 관계와 넬리가 서술하는 가족사 사이의 부조화를 그린다. 넬리는 엄마 캐서린과 히스클리프 유령들로부터 3세대를 분리하여 딸 캐서린과 헤어턴의 결합으로 수렴하는 가족사를 쓴다. 그러나 유령성은 3세대의 삶으로 이어지며 3세대의 개인화는 2세대의 욕망과 결부된다. 유령성과 개인화는 가족의 역사를 이루는 두 세대를 분절적으로 바라보지 않는 에밀리 브론테의 시각을 반영하며 젠더화된 개인들의 결혼으로 이루어진 가족을 정상화하는 넬리식 가족사 쓰기의 실패를 시사한다. 1장은 유령성의 실마리를 엄마 캐서린의 소녀 유령에게서 찾는다. 캐서린은 집이 없고 형체가 모호하게 묘사되며 자신의 고통을 묵인하고 유령으로 명명된다. 이 특징들은 2세대의 삶이 공개되기에 앞서 2세대의 삶을 요약한다. 학대받는 2세대의 삶 이야기가 소녀 유령의 특징을 반복적으로 재현하는 사이 워더링 하이츠는 유령을 낳는 유령의 집이라는 의미를 획득하고 관광객-서술자 록우드의 유사 유령 체험이 그 위력을 입증한다. 2장은 히스클리프가 기획한 복수가 3세대를 구속하는 양상에 초점을 맞춘다. 1장에서 밝힌 네 번의 변주를 통해 구축되는 유령성은 워더링 하이츠를 중심에 둔 유령적 삶의 패턴을 형성한다. 3세대가 이 패턴을 뒤따라 밟으면서 유령성은 회귀와 결박이라는 보다 구체적인 의미를 얻는다. 유령성으로부터 3세대가 탈피하는 과정에서 성애에 기반을 둔 로맨스와 책이 결정적인 역할을 한다. 3장은 서술자 넬리에게 주목한다. 유령성과 개인화가 구현되는 방식은 2세대와 3세대가 서로 침투하는 관계에 있음을 명시한다. 하지만 넬리는 2세대를 유령으로 3세대를 개인으로 구별하고 좁은 의미의 가족 형성을 지지하고 축하한다. 넬리의 적극적인 개입에도 불구하고 『워더링 하이츠』에 잔존하는 유령성과 끝까지 가족에 편입되지 않는 히스클리프의 존재는 넬리의 권위를 흔든다.

This study examines Emily Brontës Wuthering Heights by focusing on dissonances between disseminated generational relationships and the monolithic family history narrated by Nelly. Nelly separates the third generation from the ghosts of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff to write her own version of the family history, which culminates in the union of Catherine Linton and Hareton. The third generation, however, cannot be immune to the spectrality of their parents generation, and their individuation is also related to first Catherine and Heathcliffs unfulfilled desire. Such embodiment of spectrality and individuation epitomize Emily Brontës vision which does not completely separate the two generations and fails Nellys attempt to write a family history that normalizes the family formed by marriage between gendered individuals. The first chapter finds a clue to spectrality from Catherine Lintons ghost. This figure is homeless, obscurely described, keeps silent regarding pains inflicted on her, and is perceived as a ghost. These characteristics foreshadow the lives of the second generation prior to their characterization. As the real-life stories of ill-treated/neglected second generation repeatedly represent the trades of the ghost girl, Wuthering Heights gains its significance as the ghost house that keeps reproducing spectrality. The tourist-narrator Lockwood bears witness to its power by experiencing a pseudo-ghost himself. The second chapter focuses on how Heathcliffs revenge shackles the third generation. Spectrality established by the four variations analyzed in the first chapter formulates spectral life pattern which centers on Wuthering Heights. As the third generation follows this pattern, spectrality denotes regression and restraint. For the third generation to escape from spectrality, courtship mediated by books is instrumental to their romance. The third chapter concentrates on the narrator Nelly. Although spectrality and individuation depicted in Wuthering Heights clarify the interlocking relationship between the two generations, Nelly describes the second generation as ghosts and the third as individuals to support and celebrate the formation of the modern nuclear family. Despite Nellys intervention in the family making, remaining spectrality and Heathcliffs uncontained presence weaken Nellys authority.
